  1. A CAMIM Research Seminar5thJune, 2013, Pécs Developing the Canadian TV White Space Database Miguel Vargas Martin* Jarkko Paavola+ Khalil-El-Khatib**University of Ontario Institute of Technology +Turku University of Applied Sciences

  2. Contents A/ Background B/ Problem C/ Research conducted D/ Timeline E/ Future work

  3. A/ Background • Canada transitioned to digital TV in the fall of 2011 • The analogous frequencies freed up are called white spaces (WS) • In different geographical areas different frequencies are now available for use. • What use can be given to these frequencies? Digital TV signals

  4. B/ Problem • If a device wants to make use of the newly available frequencies, how does it know which channel to use?

  5. C/ Research conducted • Two general approaches to access free frequencies: • Channel Sensing Devices - The device would first listen to a particular frequency to see if it is being used and if not it would use it. • Available Frequency Database - A central geospatial database that maintains tables of the the available frequencies in various geographical regions.

  6. Geospatial database • General architecture

  7. Canadian database

  8. Database access • The PAWS protocol is designed to access the TVWS database • Can data be read or modified during transit? • What is the potential damage a rogue device can inflict? • How are the integrity and confidentiality of the database protected?

  9. D/ Timeline • Once upon a time… May 2012: Miguel and Khalil recruit masters’ + UG students Sep 2012: Miguel and Khalil recruit UG Capstone team Nov 2011: Jarkko visits UOIT Aug 2011: Jarkko introduces Miguel and Khalil to TVWS April 2012: Miguel and Khalil get NSERC grant Dec 2012: 1 master’s graduates Aug 2012: Raw DB is completed Oct 2012: Khalil visits TUAS

  10. E/ Future work • Comparative study of database access performance using simulations • Prototype database access using real devices • Security exploits

  11. UOIT student credits • Master: • Geoffrey Vaughan (IT Security) • Ola Ashour Mohammed (Electrical and Computer Engineering) • Bachelor of IT: • Arian Muhammad • Faisal Ilahie • Zachary de Lima • ZainKarmally
