  4. Estar with adjectives • To tell where people are and things are located Colombia estáen Sudamérica. Elena está en el gimnasio. • To talk about how someone is doing. ¿Cómo está usted? Todos estamos bien.

  5. Estar is also used with adjectives to describe people’s emotional and physical condition. Carlos está muy contento. (Carlos is very happy.) Estoy furiosa. (I am furious.) ¿Estás triste? (Are you sad?) • Estar can also be used to describe tastes or appearances or to tell how something “seems” to the speaker. La comida está rica. (The food is delicious.) ¡Estás muy elegante! (You look very elegant.)

  7. The Present Progressive and -ndo verb forms • Used to describe an action in progress. • In Spanish, the present progressive is formed with the verb estar plus the –ndo form of another verb.

  8. Present Progressive • In English, the present progressive is formed with the verb to be plus the –ing form. I am watching TV. • In Spanish, it is used only to describe an action that is taking place right at the moment. ¿Qué estás haciendo? (What are you doing.) Estoy leyendo. (I’m reading.) • The verbs come and go are not ordinarily used in the progressive in Spanish. Vamos a clase. (We’re going to class.) Pablo viene a las cinco. (Pablo is coming at 5:00.)
