Islamic Society • Describe slavery in Islamic society. • Slaves came from Africa and non-Islamic populations; served in the army and as domestic servants • Islamic law made it clear that slaves should be treated fairly and it was considered a good act to free them. • Any slave or prisoner converting to Islam should be immediately set free, according to shari’ah.

Describe the role of women in Islamic society. • Every woman had a male guardian. • Women had the right to own and inherit property. • Women could enter freely into marriage and divorce under some circumstances. • To divorce; a man would give his wife a bag of gold while saying 3x, “I divorce thee, I divorce thee, I divorce thee.”
