  1. Mechanical Division Standard Hand Tools

  2. Topics Design T-Square Drafting Triangle Caliper Fabrication MVRT115 Hacksaw Cordless Drill File Sandpaper & Steel Wool Assembly Wrench & Adjustable Wrench Allen Key Screwdriver Ratchet

  3. Design

  4. T-Square Used in conjunction with drafting board and triangle Allows drawing of horizontal lines Keep your T-Square clean and check to make sure it is straight MVRT115 Examples of t-squares used in the art department

  5. Drafting Triangle Used by sliding on top of T-Square Allows drawing of vertical lines Keep your triangle clean MVRT115 Keep your triangle clean

  6. Caliper Used for precision measuring of thickness and diameter Measures up to ten-thousandths (0.001) of an inch Useful for measuring shaft and hole diameters MVRT115 A set of calipers similar to ours

  7. Fabrication

  8. Hacksaw Useful for cutting down long bolts & PVC Long smooth cuts versus short rapid spasms Angle downward for ease of cutting Watch table edge and corner MVRT115 Be careful not to damage the blade A high tension hacksaw similar to ours

  9. Cordless Drill Useful for drilling holes or tightening/loosening screws Use only when accuracy is not an issue Do not completely discharge the battery; it shortens its average life span Avoid having to drill aluminum MVRT115 Don’t even try to drill steel Avoid over-tightening screws Try not to wear out screw heads Click to continue A standard cordless drill

  10. File Effective at “making stuff fit together” by grinding down edges Absolutely not for precision parts File perpendicular to the teeth and away from yourself in smooth strokes Use only on wood, Plastic, and aluminum MVRT115 Stay away from steel Can be used as an alternative to the de-burring tool for de-burring Click to continue A typical file

  11. Sandpaper & Steel Wool A step down from the file in terms of grinding power Absolutely not for precision parts Use appropriate grit for material and amount to sand down Higher grit = finer sand MVRT115 Generally use low (60-100) grit to start out wood and plastic Use medium (120-180) grit for working wood, plastic, and grinding aluminum High (220+) grit for finishing wood, plastic, and light work on aluminum Continued on Next slide

  12. Sandpaper & Steel Wool Steel wool is excellent for “persuading” shafts and other slightly-too-big parts to fit Beware of the steel dust that falls off when polishing; they will make electrical unhappy! MVRT115 Various grades of sandpaper Rolls of steel wool

  13. Assembly

  14. Wrenches and A. Wrenches Generally used in pairs to tighten bolts and nuts Alternative to ratchet when space is an issue Use appropriate measuring system (metric or English/standard/whatever) to avoid wearing down nuts and bolt heads MVRT115 Avoid using the adjustable wrench when possible; slippage causes wearing on the bolt heads and nuts Click to continue An Adjustable Wrench A Wrench

  15. Allen Keys Used to tighten and loosen socket-head bolts and screws Comes in two flavors; Metric and English/Standard/Whatever The ball-shaped end allows easy insertion to start off tightening MVRT115 The flat end has greater potential for tightening torque due to long handle Replace Allen keys in proper sets Your everyday set of allen keys

  16. Screwdriver Used to tighten and loosen Slot and Phillips head screws Slot, or commonly known as flat, is used for slot head screws Phillips is used for Phillips head screws MVRT115 Wider-diameter Phillips screwdrivers generally have flatter tips Use proper judgment when selecting a screwdriver to avoid unnecessary head wearing Click to continue A screwdriver

  17. Ratchet Used to tighten and loosen Hex head bolts Generally used in conjunction with a wrench on the nut/bolt head Fast and easy way to loosen and tighten bolts MVRT115 Socket heads come in metric and English/standard/whatever Use proper judgment when selecting a socket head to avoid wearing To change socket heads, press and hold the release button on the back of the ratchet head Continued on Next slide

  18. Ratchet Then remove the socket, fit the new socket head on completely, and release the release button Ensure the ratchet stop is set in the proper direction To change rotational direction, flip the switch on the back of the ratchet head to the other side of the head MVRT115 Remember to replace socket heads in their proper locations Some ratchet Click to continue
