Tá an leabhrán seo curtha le chéile chun eolas a thabhairt duit ar an scoil agus chun cabhrú le do pháiste socrú go daingean sa scoil. Má tá aon cheist agat, ná bíodh moill ort dul i dteagmháil linn. I would like to take this opportunity to welcome your family to Gaelscoil Átha Í. We hope that your child will have many enjoyable years while they are with us. This booklet has been put together to give you information about our school and to help your child to settle in. Stair naScoile / History of the School Bunaíodh Gaelscoil Átha Í sa bhliain 2004 mar go raibh grúpa tuismitheoirí agus daoine eile sa bhaile go raibh spéis acu sa teanga thart ar Bhaile Átha í a bhí ag lorg oideachais trí mheáin na Gaeilge dá bpáistí. Bhí 21 dalta ar scoil ar an chéad lá Mean Fómhair 2004 agus bhí an scoil lonnaithe in Aontas Ógra ar Bhóthar Chill Channaigh ag an am sin. Bhogamar suas cúig talamh an chlub sacar ar bhóthar Bhaile Átha Cliath i mí Aibreán 2005 agus bhogamar isteach in ár bhfoirgneamh álainn nua ar an 9 Samhain 2009 agus táimid ag fás is ag forbairt anseo ó shin. Faoi láthair tá 170 páiste ar na rollaí agus tá seachtar múinteoir lán aimsireacha againn. Tá an Múinteoir Doireann ag múineadh rang na naíonán bheaga, tá an Múinteoir Máire Dolores ag múineadh rang na naíonán mhóra, tá an Múinteoir Daithí ag múineadh rang a haon, tá an múinteoir Uinseann ag múineadh rang a dó , tá an Múinteoir Éamonn ag múineadh rang a trí, tá an Múinteoir Dion ag múineadh rang a ceathair agus tá an Múinteoir Stiofáin/ Sorcha ag múineadh rang 5. Is í an Múinteoir Gobnait an múinteoir tacaíochta foghlama. Táimid ag súil go mbeidh thart ar 202 dalta sa scoil i mbliana. Tugadh aitheantas buan dúinn ón Roinn Oideachais agus Eolaíochta in Márta 2007. Faoi láthair tá ranganna againn ó naíonáin bheaga- rang a cúig. Beidh rang a sé againn i 2011/2012. Beimid ag fáil síneadh leis an scoil i mbliana – halla agus leabharlann atá i gceist agus tá súil againn go mbeidh siad réidh roimh dheireadh na scoilbliana seo chugainn. Ní bheidh cúraimí ranga ar an bpríomhoide don chéad uair riamh i mbliana.

Stair naScoile / History of the School Gaelscoil Átha Í was established in 2004 because there were a group of parents and others who were interested in the language who were looking for Irish medium education for their children. There were 21 pupils on the first day and the school opened on 1st September 2004 in Aontas Ógra also known as The Arch/ Dreamland which is located on the Kilkenny road. We moved up to the soccer club premises on the Dublin Road in April 2005 and we eventually moved into our fabulous new building on 9th of November 2009 and we have been growing and developing here since then. There are currently 170 children on the rolls and 9 full time teachers. Múinteoir Doireann is teaching junior infants, Múinteoir Máire Dolores is teaching senior infants, Múinteoir Daithí is teaching 1st class, Múinteoir Uinseann is teaching 2nd class, Múinteoir Éamonn is teaching 3rd class and Múinteoir Dion is teaching 4th class and Múinteoir Sorcha/Stiofán. Múinteoir Gobnait is our learning support teacher. We hope to have around 202 children in September. We were granted permanent recognition from the Department of Education and Science in March 2007. We currently have classes from junior infants to 5th class and we will have children in 6th class in 2011/2012. We will be getting an extension to our building it will include a hall and a library and we hope that this project will be completed before the end of the new school year. We will have a full time administrative principal for the first time in September 2010.

6. ~Sainmheoin Na Scoile / Religion~Patrún Na Scoile/School Patron • Tá sainmheoin idirchreidmheach ag Gaelscoil Átha Í. Bíonn an reiligiún Caitliceach agus Eaglais na hÉireann á mhúineadh againn le linn am scoile. Is ghnách don reachtaire agus an sagart cuairt a thabhairt ar an scoil. Cleachtaimid tumoideachas iomlán in rang na naíonáin bheaga chun seans a thabhairt do na leanaí a bheith báite sa teanga ón dtús. • Gaelscoil Átha Í is an inter-denominational school. Both Roman Catholic and Church of Ireland faiths are taught during school time. It is usual for both the Rector and the Priest to visit the school. Children are prepared for the sacraments during school hours. We practice total immersion in Junior infants to give the children the opportunity to be fully immersed in the language. * * * * * * * * * * • Is é Foras Pátrúnachta Na Scoileanna Lán – Ghaeilge patrún na scoile seo. • The patron of our school is the Foras Pátrúnachta Na Scoileanna lán Gaeilge.

7. An BordBainistíochta / Board of Management • Tá ochtar ar an mBord Bainistíochta. Tá beirt ionadaí ag na tuismitheoirí ar an mBord Bainistíochta, beirt mhúinteoir, beirt atá ainmnithe ag an bpátrún agus beirt ón bpobal. Tá an Bord Bainistíochta freagrach as an scoil agus is í an príomhoide atá i gceannas ar reáchtáil laethúil na scoile. • There are eight members on the board. The board comprises of two parent’s representatives – Catherine Cullen & Martin Dalton, two teachers(principal plus one other – Sinéad & Doireann), two people nominated by the patron – Seosamh O Gallachóir (Chairperson) & Peadar O Murchú, and two members of the community – Kathleen Robinson & Helen Murphy. The Board of Management is responsible for the running of the school and the Principal is responsible for the day-to- day management.

9. Coistenadtuismitheoirí / Parents’ Association • Tacaíonn coiste na dtuismitheoirí le obair na scoile. Bíonn cruinniú acu go rialta de gnáth ceann in aghaidh na míosa. Bíonn an choiste ag tabhairt cabhair agus tacaíocht don scoil trí chiste a bhailiú, cabhair a thabhairt ag ócáidí scoile srl. Is í Carmel Henry ( Mamaí Maitiú- Rang 1) cathaoirleach an choiste faoi láthair. Bíonn an cruinniú cinn bliana de gnáth ag tús na bliana agus is anseo go mbíonn toghchán don choiste nua. • Is bealach an mhaith é seo chun a bheith páirteach i saol na scoile agus chun aithne a chur ar thuismitheoirí eile. Ní bheadh an scoil in ann leanúint ar aghaidh mar atá gan an tacaíocht airgeadais agus cabhair ón ngrúpa seo, mar shampla cheannaigh siad clár cliste don scoil chomh maith le go leor aiseanna teagaisc eile agus táimid fíor bhuíoch dóibh do na rudaí sin ar fad. • This committee helps with the work of the school. They hold regular meetings throughout the year usually once a month. They help by fundraising, helping at school events etc. Carmel Henry ( Maitiú’s Mam from 1st class) is the current chairperson. The A.G.M. usually takes place in September when the new committee is elected. • This is a great way for new parents to school to get involved and to get to know other parents in the school. Our school would not be able to carry on without the financial support of this group of people who give most generously of their time and resources. For example in the past they have Purchased an interactive white board for the school and for this and the many other teaching resources they have bought us along with their continued support and loyalty we thank them.

Buachaillí: Bríste liath, geansaí dearg na scoile, léine bhán agus carbhat. An Culaith Reatha: Ceann na scoile le t-léine dhearg. Is féidir leo bríste gearra liath nó dúghorm a chaitheamh nuair atá an aimsir go deas más maith leo. Sa chás go bhfuil éide amháin salach nó fliuch is féidir leo an ceann eile a chaitheamh. Tá cóta scoile ar fáil ach níl sé riachtanach agus ní moltar é seo ach go háirithe do na naíonáin mar nach féidir leo iad a aithint ón a chéile Moltar do pháistí bróga "cearta" (seachas bróga reatha) a chaitheamh leis an éide scoile, agus bróga reatha leis an gculaith reatha. Children wear their red/ grey uniforms every day except on PE or swimming days when they wear their school tracksuits. The official crested school jumpers and tracksuits are available in Shaw’s, Athy, the remainder of the uniform can be sourced anywhere. Tracksuit days are Wednesday and Friday. Girls: grey skirt, pinafore or trousers, grey socks or tights, red school jumper or cardigan, white blouse and tie. Boys: Grey trousers, red school jumper, white shirt and tie. School tracksuit: navy crested school jumper (available in Shaw’s), plain navy bottoms (no stripes please) and a red polo shirt. The children may wear grey or navy shorts when the weather is fine if they like. If the situation should arise that one uniform is wet or dirty the other may be worn. School jacket available but this is optional and is not recommended in infants as they tend to get mixed up as the children cannot tell them apart. We recommend that children wear proper shoes as opposed to runners with their red uniform. We would advise that children have shoes with velcro ties rather than laces. ÉideScoile / School Uniform

11. 12. Feidhmíonn an scoil faoi rialacha na Roinne Oideachais agus Eolaíochta do scoileanna náisiúnta. Leanann an scoil Curaclam na Bunscoile ach tugtar tús áite don Ghaeilge in rang na naíonáin bheaga, mar thoradh ar seo iarraimid ar na tuismitheoirí seo cinnte a dhéanamh go mbíonn rím / scéalta agus rannta a dhéanamh leo sa bhaile chun forbairt a dhéanamh ar an béarla ó bhéil. The school operates under the regulations of the Department of Education and Science for national schools. The school follows the Primary School Curriculum 1999. However as preference is given to Irish in junior infants, we would ask that parents remember to do nursery rhymes / stories and poems at home in English with their child to develop their oral language. Tá sé i gceist againn atmaisféar cairdiúil a chruthú sa chaoi go léireofar meas ar aon iarracht a dhéantar agus nach mbeadh faitíos ar aon duine an Ghaeilge atá acu a úsáid. It is our aim to create an Irish language atmosphere in the school, so that the children will not merely acquire the language, but achieve a standard which will enable them to study every subject through the medium of Irish (except, of course, English).Therefore, Irish is the language of communication of the school. We encourage the teachers, students and parents, the inspector and the board of management to speak in Irish. We encourage you to use the Irish that you know when you meet with us, thereby giving a positive attitude towards the language to the children. The school is not concerned with the amount of Irish or the standard of Irish you have. We are not concerned with mistakes or lack of knowledge, nor are we here to correct parents. We hope to create a very friendly atmosphere in the school, such that any attempt made will be respected and welcomed. Please do not be afraid to use any Irish that you have. The class teacher will speak to you about your child if they have any concerns or worries and we would ask that you would do the same with us. If you do not come to the school to collect your child just ring or send in a note explaining the difficulty. Newsletters are sent home once a month and usually on a Wednesday during the month with all the latest news from the school so please check your child’s folder. The youngest child will have it in the case of siblings. Parent/teacher meetings are held once a year, usually in November. There will only be one meeting per child and in case of parents living apart we would ask that they come to an arrangement locally and the details of this meeting will go home with the child to the house they live in. A written report is sent home for each child in June. Teachers / parents may request a meeting if they feel it is necessary. 15. CódIompair / Code of Behaviour • General guidelines for behaviour- Treoirlínte ginearálta We aim to provide a well-ordered and disciplined environment at Gaelscoil Átha Í where every child is safe and happy and to provide a curriculum and working atmosphere to help each child develop his/her potential. Rules and regulations have been drawn up to ensure the smooth running of the school and for the safety and protection of children and staff. Some apply directly to children, while others require the co-operation and assistance of parents. However all, to a greater or lesser extent, require the close co-operation of pupils, parents, teachers and Board of Management. All pupils are expected to behave in a responsible manner both towards themselves and others, showing consideration, courtesy and respect for other pupils and adults. BULLYING OF ALL SORTS, VERBAL AND PHYSICAL, IS UNACCEPTED AT ALL TIMES IN THE CLASSROOM, IN THE PLAYGROUND AND DURING ALL SCHOOL- RELATED ACTIVITIES. We want a code of discipline which is deemed fair and seen to be enforced. It should emphasise the positive facets of behaviour and appeal to the child’s better nature to encourage an acceptable standard of behaviour. The aim is to develop a sense of responsibility on the part of the pupils for their individual actions and a realisation of the consequences of such behaviour. When pupils misbehave and when sanctions are invoked they should understand that what they have done is unacceptable. They should also be encouraged to reflect on how they ought to behave in the future.

16. CódIompair / Code of Behaviour • Behaviour in the class / Iompar sa seomra ranga We would hope to create a climate in which pupil’s self esteem is nurtured and misbehaviour becomes a less attractive way of getting attention. Pupils should carry out instructions given by the teacher and diligently do the work assigned to them. Written work should be carefully and neatly presented. ANY BEHAVIOUR WHICH DISRUPTS CLASSROOM ACTIVITY IS NOT ACCEPTABLE AS IT INFRINGES ON THE RIGHTS OF OTHERS TO LEARN. • Behaviour in the playground / Iompar sa chlós Pupils should recognise and respect the rights of other children in the playground. Any behaviour which is likely to cause injury or offence is not acceptable. To threaten to cause injury is equally unacceptable. If bullying of this nature occurs the pupil should report the matter to the supervising teacher. Bullying behaviour in the playground is not acceptable. Pupils should put their litter in the bins and keep the yard clean and tidy. • Behaviour in the school environment / Iompar sa timpeallacht For reasons of safety and to minimise accidents, pupils should move around the school in a quiet and orderly manner. Pupils should walk quietly in school environs. Courteous behaviour, e.g. standing back to let adults by at doorways, addressing teachers and adults with respect etc. is expected. Pupils must show respect for school property and for the property of the individual. Recompense is expected to be made by pupil/ parent for damage, loss or theft of property. Children are expected to behave properly in their way into and from school and on any school outings or extra curricular activity.

17. Luachanna Saothair / Rewards may include: Verbal/ written encouragement and praise. Notification to parents. Certificate of Merit. Written record in school files for exceptional behaviour. Exemption from homework. Responsibilities in school. Special privileges. Small awards. Smachtbhannaí / Sanctions may include: The pupil is made aware of the fact that his/her misbehaviour is unacceptable. The pupil may receive a verbal reprimand from the teacher. Parents may be notified. Badly presented work may have to be re-done. The seating arrangements in class may be changed. A pupil may be temporarily separated from class group. A pupil may be detained or confined to a certain area during break- time. Loss of privileges. Written record of misbehaviour. If misbehaviour occurs at break-time or at any other time during the day any member of the teaching staff may impose a sanction and inform the class teacher. A pupil may be referred to the principal. Parents may be called to the school to discuss the child’s behaviour with a view to helping the child overcome the difficulty. Suspension. Expulsion CódIompair / Code of Behaviour

18. Tá an t-áth linn anseo go bhfuil múinteoir tacaíochta lán aimsireach againn sa scoil. Is seans atá anseo chun tacú le páistí go bhfuil beagáinín cabhair breise ag teastáil uathu agus freisin chun dúshlán breise a chuir ar fáil do pháistí eile. Uaireanta beidh an múinteoir seo ag obair le grúpaí beaga rud a chabhraíonn go mór le féin mhuinín agus uaireanta eile beidh sí ag obair taobh leis an múinteoir ranga agus ag obair le ranganna iomlána. Beidh sí ag déanamh scrúdaithe agus triallacha ar na páistí freisin. We are very fortunate to have a full time learning support teacher based in our school. This gives a chance to provide additional support to some children and to provide additional challenges to others. Some times the teacher will work with small groups which helps children to gain self confidence and at other times she will work alongside the class teacher and provide additional support for full classes. No staff member at the school can ever give a child medicine of any kind.

Is é an polasaí atá na scoile gan leigheas a riaradh d’aon pháiste sa scoil. • Má athraíonn tú seoladh nó uimhir gutháin i rith na bliana, tá se fíor thábhachtach é sin a chur in iúil don scoil. • It is important that the children arrive to school and are collected on time. If your child is absent, please send an explanatory letter to the school. If your child is absent for more than 20 days in one school year we must inform the National Educational Welfare Board. We strongly recommend that children are not taken out of school to go on holidays. • A sick child should not be sent to school. It is the policy of the school not to administer medication to any child. • If you change your address or telephone number during the year please inform the school.

Níl ach 15 nóiméad acu chun an lón a ithe agus moltar duit lón ciallmhar shláintiúil a thabhairt dóibh .Bíonn cead acu treat beag amháin a thabhairt leo ar an Aoine amháin. Ní cheadaítear guma coganta ar scoil riamh. Bíonn sos acu dhá uair i rith an lae. Itheann siad torthaí agus glasraí amháin ag an gcéad sos. Because we have a healthy eating policy, no child is allowed crisps, chocolate, fizzy drinks or sweets for lunch. We recommend sandwiches, fruit, yogurt and vegetables and not pre-packed lunches e.g. lunchables. Your child should be supplied with a piece of kitchen roll with their lunch for any spills and so that they can eat off a clean surface. It is not unusual for children to be given quite a big lunch. Please be advised that 15 minutes only is given for children to eat their lunch and it would be best if each child has a sensible, healthy lunch. Homework is given to pupils on week nights and not at the weekend. Junior infants will not have homework until after the first mid- term break. We recommend that junior and senior infants spend 10-15 minutes, that 1st class spend 15-20 minutes and that 2nd class spend 20-30 minutes and 3rd and 4th class should spend roughly 30-40 minutes, and that 5th and 6th class spend roughly 40-50 minutes each night doing homework. Homework is corrected regularly. If your child does not complete their work in the given amount of time please do not continue and just send a note of explanation to the teacher the next day. Weekly voluntary money is collected to help with the costs of running the school, €5 for one child, €8 for two children and €10 for three or more children. The envelopes go home with the youngest child in each family on Wednesday’s and should only be returned on Friday. This money helps to buy additional teaching resources and equipment for the children and it also go towards the secretary’s wages for one day every week. They must reside at least two miles away from the school and there must be seven children in the same area for a bus run to be provided. If you are over the two miles but there are not seven children in the area an allowance is payable. All the new addresses have already been forwarded to Busáras. If you are not two miles away but the bus passes your house you may apply to Busáras to pay for a ticket provided that there is space on the bus. There are local buses who come to the school also to collect children. The bus drivers are responsible for the children while they are travelling on the bus.

Ag Réitiú do Pháiste don Scoil / Preparing your child for School Before starting school, every child should be able to: - Remove and hang up his/her coat - Use the toilet without parental assistance - Wash his/her hands unassisted - Open and eat their lunch unaided - Play companionably and co-operate with other children - Recognise their own school bag and lunch box and be able to open and close it themselves Write your child’s name as Gaeilge on all of their belongings. Please put a change of clothes in the schoolbag in the case of junior/senior infants as accidents do happen. You are encouraged to watch TG4 and listen to radio na Gaeltachta with your child and to use any Irish you have with your child at home. Decide on a bedtime for your child and adhere to it. Infants get very tired at school. When you come to the open afternoon with your child introduce him/her by name to Múinteoir Sinéad, Fiona, Gobnait, Doireann, Eamonn, Sorcha, Máire Dolores, Daithí, Uinseann and be sure that your child recognises them and can say their names. You could give your child opportunities to practice “school activities” e.g. playing, drawing, word games, opening and closing their lunch box and looking at books.

Iarraimid ar thuismitheoirí am a thógáil an mhaidin sin agus teacht idir 9:00 agus 9:30 ionas go mbeidh seans ag an múinteoir ranga labhairt le gach páiste nuair a thagann siad. Cuir do pháiste in aithne lena ainm do múinteoir ranga ar an dtráthnóna oscailte agus ar an gcéad lá chun cabhrú linn aithne a chuir orthu. Is féidir leis an gcaoineadh leanúint ar aghaidh ar feadh cúpla seachtain ach diaidh ar ndiaidh, socraíonn gach páiste faoi / fúithi.

44. An ChéadLá / The First day It is not unusual for children to be anxious and upset on the first day of school. With this in mind parents are welcome to come and stay in the classroom for a few minutes, however the class teacher will be unable to begin teaching while you are still in the room. The school will ring you if your child does not settle. It is best to seat your child and get him/her some activity to keep them busy. When the time comes to leave it is best to say a definite, firm good bye and to leave immediately. The teachers are very experienced when it comes to first days at school and will know how to settle and cheer children. If you are emotional or upset on the day please to not allow your child to see this. The fact that the children will have been to visit the school and have already met their teacher during the open afternoon will help greatly. We would ask that parents stagger their arrival on this day between 9:00-9:30 so that the class teacher will be able to greet each child as they arrive. Please introduce your child by their name to the teacher both on the open afternoon and on the first day to help the teacher to get to known all of the children in the class. It may happen that a few weeks will pass before the tears stop, but little by little; day by day everyone will settle comfortably and happily.

We ask that parents be punctual when collecting their child from school, as children get very upset if they are not collected on time. We have a system in place to let the children go home. We ask parents to stand outside the school gate but where the teacher can see them and that they do not disturb the teacher or the children. The teacher will open the door/gate and will release the child when they see a named adult to collect them. We also ask for your patience with this system as it will take a while for the class teacher to get to know all parents and children. If a parent is not collecting their child please inform the school beforehand. We are not happy to release your child into the care of anyone who is a stranger to us. You will be able to nominate people who have permission to collect your child on the information sheet that will be sent home during the first week of school, if an adult arrives to collect your child who does not appear on the list the child will not be allowed to go with them.
