  1. What is plagiarism? (And why you should care!)

  2. Definition: Plagiarism is the act of presenting the words, ideas, images, or the sounds of others as your own.

  3. Intentional Copying a friend’s work Cutting and pasting blocks of text from electronic sources without documenting Media “borrowing” without documentation Unintentional Careless paraphrasing Poor documentation Quoting excessively Failure to use your own “voice” Two types of plagiarism:

  4. What’s the big deal? Wrong! Paraphrasing original ideas without documenting your source, is plagiarism too! If I change a few words, I’m okay, right?

  5. Why should I not plagiarize? MY VOICE NEEDS TO BE HEARD! • When you copy you cheat yourself. You limit your own learning. • The consequences are not worth the risks! • It is only right to give credit to authors whose ideas you use • Citing makes it possible for your readers to locate your source

  6. How do I Avoid plagiarism?

  7. First steps! • Take notes in your own words • “Use quotations if you want to use the words of another.” (Last name of author) • Make a bibliography…. Citation Maker rocks!

  8. You’ll do in-text citations in LA. • Do your bibliography as you go…. (or make a Word document with URLs and complete the bibliography later.) • Write your source on your notecard. • Use at least one notecard for each question. • Use one card for each source.

  9. Get help on the Bibliography link on the Social Issues website – listen to the screencasts… This PPT is adapted from one by Joyce Valenzula.
