  1. WEEE Directive DmitrijZarinovs 10114882 Article that I looked at was from European Union Official Journal.

  2. About Directive This directive mainly focuses on laying down measures to protect environment and human health by reducing adverse impacts of the generation and management of WEEE and by reducing overall resource use.

  3. Most Important Findings WEEE Directive will be implemented between 13 August 2012 and 14 August 2018 this period will be known as transition period. During transition period each member country should encourage cooperation between producers and recyclers. During this period member country should also promote the design and production of EEE, notably in view of facilitating reuse, dismantling and recovery of WEEE its components and materials.

  4. WEEE Directive will not apply onto medical, military and large scale equipment. As part of directive each private household can return electronic waste to a distributer free of charge. By 2016 the min. collected rate shall be 45% calculated on the basis of the weight of WEEE collected, expressed as percentage of the average weight of EEE placed on the market in the 3 preceding years. The volume of WEEE collected should increase gradually and by 2019 the min. collected rate to be achieved annually shall be 65%.

  5. What the industry is being asked to finance? Producers are responsible for financing the take-back of WEEE and batteries or accumulators and have responsibilities regarding collection, recycling and treatment of WEEE collected.

  6. What does directive say about reuse? Appropriate measures have to be taken by producers so that the eco design requirements facilitate reuse and treatment of WEEE established in the framework of directive are applied and producers do not prevent through specific design features and manufacturing processes , WEEE from being reused. Only materials that are hazard to an environment shall not be reused.

  7. How does compliance scheme work? All WEEE producers are obligated to pay a registration fee which goes direct to relevant environment agency. A fee that producers pays all depends on the amount of tonnes of EEE they produce and place on the market per year. The more company produces the larger market share they have therefore they pay higher membership fee.

  8. WEEE practice in Ireland Irish government implemented the WEEE directive in August 2015. From 13th August 2005 all Producers and Distributers of EEE must comply with the WEEE Regulations 2005. Producers of EEE must register with the WEEE Registration Society. In Ireland the recycling system is handled by two companies WEEE Ireland and the European Recycling Platform.
