  1. Fantasizing The Truth

  2. Willy Loman – His Dreams, ideas and aim to reach the American dream Willy Loman believed in the Capitalist side of the American dream, where it was all about being successful and getting promotions in the business world, with the family in the white house and with the white picket fence. He thought this was important. However he - like biff - was a failure in business and never archived this goal.

  3. As Willy is old and tired his mind has trouble distinguishing between the past and present - between illusion and reality - and is often lost in flashbacks. • These flashbacks are generally during the summer after or during Biff's senior year of high school when all of the family problems began. • Willy often exaggerates the truth or lies about the past to escape from the ever pressuring truth of reality.

  4. Fantasized Characters Ben – Ben is Willy’s brother and usually appears in Willy’s mind when Willy is facing a problem he doesn’t know how to solve. He asks for help and advice where Ben replies “when I was seventeen I walked into the jungle, and when I was twenty-one I walked out. And by God I was rich.” Another quote by Ben is “What are you building? Lay your hand on it. Where is it? Dave Singleman – Dave Singleman was a salesman who was very popular and did his job well. Willy looks up to Singleman and wants to be remember like him. “ and pick up his phone and call the buyers, without even leaving his room, at the age of eighty-four, he made his living.” “ I realized that selling was the greatest career a man could want.”

  5. Fantasized Characters The Woman – When Willy travels he says he gets lonely and the woman is a way for him to escape his failure in life by pretending to be successful in front of her. He usually fantasies the women when he fells guilty about what he did to Linda. A symbol that was repeated throughout the play to show his guilt was stockings. There are also a few scenes were Willy fantasies the dream with biff and happy. Two examples of this is ‘A Million Dollar Idea’ and ‘The Chophouse’. The Chophouse is different however because biff has a change of heart and decides to tell the truth to Willy.

  6. Conclusion Willy is always fantasying and cannot face the truth. This is a main theme of the play because Willy cannot face the truth and eventually has a mental breakdown which is the basis of his suicide attempt.
