  1. DOK 3A Review

  2. Diffusion • Movement of molecules from high concentration to low concentration (from an area where there is a lot to where there is not) • Through selectively permeable membrane (vanilla balloon), air (scented candle), water (food coloring in water) • Requires no energy

  3. Osmosis • Movement of water only through a selectively permeable membrane only • Moves from high to low concentration • Requires no energy • Examples: eggs in water and corn syrup, eggplant with salt, flowers, raisins

  4. Measurement-Length • Distance • Measured using a ruler • Units = meters (centimeters, millimeters, etc.)

  5. Measurement-Mass • The amount of matter in an object • Measured using a triple beam balance • Units=grams

  6. Measurement-Volume • Amount of space an object takes up • Calculated volume • Length x width x height • Volume displacement • The difference between the volume of water alone in a graduated cylinder and the volume of water AND an object in a graduated cylinder

  7. Measurement-Temperature • The average kinetic energy of particles moving in an object • Uses a thermometer • Units = °C

  8. Measurement-Density • Density = Love D= mass volume Units = g or g mL cm³

  9. Source of Error • Parts of the experiment that are outside of our control and cause uncertainties in experimental results • Paraphrase: parts of the experiment that we can plan for, but cannot control which make the data inaccurate • Ex. Weather, power outages
