  1. Dividing Fractions and Mixed Numbers Objective: Learn to divide fractions and mixed numbers.

  2. Reciprocals:1. Reciprocal means to “flip” the fraction. 2. You put the numerator in the denominator’s place and the denominator in the numerator’s place. Example of Reciprocals: Find the reciprocal of 4 = 11 11 4 2) Find the reciprocal of 3 = 8 3) Find the reciprocal of 1 4

  3. 1. When dividing fractions you have to find the reciprocal of the second fraction. 2. Then you change the division sign to a multiplication sign. 3. Multiply normally.4. Convert any improper fractions to mixed numbers. 5. Simplify. Steps for dividing fractions: Example: 5 ÷ 2 6 3 5 × 3 6 2 15 = 12 1 3 1 1 12 = 4

  4. Examples: 3 ÷ 12 7 21 5 ÷ 1 7 7 ÷ 1 8 6

  5. When dividing Mixed Numbers: Re write the mixed numbers as improper fractions. Find the reciprocal of the second fraction. Change the ÷ sign to a × sign. Multiply normally. Convert the improper fraction back to a mixed number. Simplify. Example: 5 3 ÷ 3 2 4 3

  6. Homework 1) 1 ÷ 1 2 4 2) 5 ÷ 1 7 4 3) 3 ÷ 6 4 4) 2 ÷ 1 1 5 4 5) 4 3 1 5 ÷ 3 6) 5 4 ÷ 9 2 5 7 7) 8 1 ÷ 12 8 8) Find the reciprocal of 9 12 9) Find the reciprocal of 7 8 10) Find the reciprocal of 2 5
