  2. Drama • Refers to the theatre – a story acted out by actors on a stage. • A rich history dating back to the ancient Greeks.

  3. Comedy • A play that is expected to be humorous and produce laughter from its audience. • Generally about a love story and is characterized by a “race to the altar”.

  4. History • A play that shows the course of actual historical events. • A non-fiction work. • Generally tragedies.

  5. Tragedy • A form of drama based on the course of human suffering. • Intended for the audience to experience catharsis – the purging of human emotions. • This drama often highlights a tragic hero’s fall from grace and destruction.

  6. Conflict The central problem of a narrative.

  7. Man vs. Man • The protagonist and antagonist of the story are separate people with differences in opinion. • Ex. Rocky films

Man vs. Society • The protagonist struggles against a man-made institution. • Similar to Man vs. Man, but the protagonist fights for acceptance, understanding, or freedom from a larger group of people. • Characters are forced to make moral choices or are frustrated by social rules when trying to achieve their own goals. • Ex. Slavery, Oppression
