  1. CTBS 2011-12 A snapshot

  2. Consider the Whole Picture Teacher Observation Grades CTBS Classroom Tests Effort

  3. CTBS – Canadian Test of Basic Skills • A battery of tests in vocabulary, reading, language and math (with Science and Information Sources in Grade 9) • Provides general measure of achievement levels • Norm-Referenced • Information that compares students with national performance of grade equivalent peers

  4. Why do we do it? • Allows us to: • Track individual students and their results (are they learning? Are they learning evenly? Why or why not?) • Look at school and district results to see if there are areas of concern or strengths • Analyze why we have areas of concern or strength

  5. Results today….. Examining results on Grade Equivalent GE results are shown as a grade and partial grade. So 8.2 means grade 8 month 2. Typically a spread of approximately 1.4 years falls within the standard deviation of ‘grade level’

  6. What isn’t here… Do not have results on students who wrote out of levels Typically these are students who are performing more than 3 years below grade level 79 students in the district wrote out of levels

  7. Who are the out of levels? Over time we will track these students for growth as individuals and as a cohort.

  8. Grade 1

  9. Grade 3

  10. Grade 3 Cohort

  11. Where to now? • Teachers will: • examine results to look at individual student concerns, areas for growth and strength • Examine class results to look at group needs • Examine growth rates and consider teaching approaches over years • Administration will: • Examine class and grade results to indentify areas of needs and strengths • Examine school results to look for possible strengths and weaknesses

  12. Where to now (cont’d) • District Staff will: • Examine school and district results for patterns in regards to areas of concern and strengths • Develop action plans in conjunction with the schools to address those concerns and strengths • Important to recognize • Results are one piece of the puzzle • Look at individual students, cohort groups, grades, curriculum and other assessments and tests • Triangulation is key to ensuring we know what our students are learning
