  1. To 160th Ave Church of Christ

  2. Most Encouraging PassagesPasajesmásalentadoras • Deut. 31: …5"The LORD will deliver them up before you, and you shall do to them according to all the commandments which I have commanded you. 6"Be strong and courageous, do not be afraid or tremble at them, for the LORD your God is the one who goes with you. He will not fail you or forsake you.“ • Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, "Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.“ • Matt. 28: 20 teaching them to observe all that I commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age."

  3. Why Was Jesus Forsaken?¿Por qué fue Jesús abandonado • Matt. 27: 33 And when they came to a place called Golgotha, which means Place of a Skull, 34 they gave Him wine to drink mixed with gall; and after tasting it, He was unwilling to drink.35 And when they had crucified Him, they divided up His garments among themselves by casting lots. 36 And sitting down, they began to keep watch over Him there. 37 And above His head they put up the charge against Him which read, “THIS IS JESUS THE KING OF THE JEWS.”38 At that time two robbers *were crucified with Him, one on the right and one on the left. 39 And those passing by were hurling abuse at Him, wagging their heads

  4. Why Was Jesus Forsaken?¿Por qué fue Jesús abandonado • Matt. 27:40 and saying, “You who are going to destroy the temple and rebuild it in three days, save Yourself! If You are the Son of God, come down from the cross.” 41 In the same way the chief priests also, along with the scribes and elders, were mocking Him and saying, 42 “He saved others; He cannot save Himself. He is the King of Israel; let Him now come down from the cross, and we will believe in Him. 43 He trusts in God; let God rescue Him now, if He delights in Him; for He said, ‘I am the Son of God.’” 44 The robbers who had been crucified with Him were also insulting Him with the same words.45 Now from the sixth hour darkness fell upon all the land until the ninth hour. 46 About the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying, “Eli, Eli, lama sabachthani?” that is, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?”

  5. A Possible Explanation:Unaexplicaciónposible: • God is holy and cannot dwell with wickedness • Psalm 5:4; “For You are not a God who takes pleasure in wickedness; No evil dwells with You.” • Psalm 92:15; “…and there is no wickedness in him.” • Hab. 1:13; Your eyes are too pure to approve evil, • And You can not look on wickedness with favor. • Jesus became sin • 2 Cor. 5:12; “He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.” • Gal. 3:13; Christ redeemed us from the curse of the Law, having become a curse for us-- for it is written, "CURSED IS EVERYONE WHO HANGS ON A TREE“ • Isa. 53:6, 10; All of us like sheep have gone astray,Each of us has turned to his own way;But the Lord has caused the iniquity of us allTo fall on Him. • Vs. 10 But the Lord was pleasedTo crush Him, putting Him to grief; If He would render Himself as a guilt offering,He will see His offspring,He will prolong His days,And the good pleasure of the Lord will prosper in His hand. • Difficulties: • Possibly referring to a sin offering?; “became the offering for our sin” (2 Cor. 5:12; Isa. 53:6, 10) • Is that what Jesus meant? What was Jesus’ purpose of making that statement?

  6. Matthew’s Gospelel Evangelio de Mateo • Written to a Jewish Audience • And audience that was familiar with the Old Testament • Written to give testimony/evidence of Jesus as the Christ • Miracles • Teachings • Claims (by Him and his disciples) • Fulfillment of scripture • Promises (genealogy) • Prophecies; “this was to fulfill that which was spoken by the prophet” • “I didn’t come to abolish the law or the prophets but to fulfill…” • Fulfillments that are not specifically stated • Fulfillments of types (Matt. 4- Israel/Moses)

  7. Another Possible Explanation:Otraexplicaciónposible: • Matthew writes in a such a way to show that Jesus is fulfilling Psalm 22 • Jesus quotes the first verse to bring to mind the entire psalm. • Consider all the connections:

  8. Psalm 22Salmo 22 • 22 My God, my God, why have You forsaken me?Far from my deliverance are the words of my groaning. (Matt. 27:46) • 2O my God, I cry by day, but You do not answer; And by night, but I have no rest.3 Yet You are holy,O You who are enthroned upon the praises of Israel.4 In You our fathers trusted; They trusted and You delivered them.5 To You they cried out and were delivered; In You they trusted and were not disappointed.

  9. Psalm 22Salmo 22 • 6 But I am a worm and not a man,A reproach of men and despised by the people.7All who see me sneer at me; • They separate with the lip, they wag the head, saying, (matt. 27:39) • 8“Commit yourself to the Lord; let Him deliver him;Let Him rescue him, because He delights in him.” (Matt. 27:43- actually quoted by the bystanders)

  10. Psalm 22Salmo 22 • 9 Yet You are He who brought me forth from the womb; You made me trust when upon my mother’s breasts.10 Upon You I was cast from birth; You have been my God from my mother’s womb. • 11Be not far from me, for trouble is near; For there is none to help.

  11. Psalm 22Salmo 22 • 12 Many bulls have surrounded me;Strong bulls of Bashan have encircled me.13 They open wide their mouth at me,As a ravening and a roaring lion.14 I am poured out like water,And all my bones are out of joint; My heart is like wax;It is melted within me.

  12. Psalm 22Salmo 22 • 15 My strength is dried up like a potsherd,And my tongue cleaves to my jaws; And You lay me in the dust of death.16 For dogs have surrounded me;A band of evildoers has encompassed me; • They pierced my hands and my feet. (Matt. 27:35) • 17I can count all my bones. They look, they stare at me; • 18They divide my garments among them,And for my clothing they cast lots. (Matt. 27:35)

  13. Why Does Jesus quote verse 1?¿por qué Jesús cita versículo 1 • Not because this psalm shows how he is forsaken, but because of how this psalm ends!!! • The psalm begins with the absence of hope but makes a dramatic change.

  14. Ending of Psalm 22final del Salmo 22 • 19 But You, O Lord, be not far off;O You my help, hasten to my assistance.20 Deliver my soul from the sword,My only life from the power of the dog.21 Save me from the lion’s mouth; From the horns of the wild oxen You answer me.

  15. Ending of Psalm 22final del Salmo 22 • 22 I will tell of Your name to my brethren; In the midst of the assembly I will praise You.23 You who fear the Lord, praise Him;All you descendants of Jacob, glorify Him,And stand in awe of Him, all you descendants of Israel.24 For He has not despised nor abhorred the affliction of the afflicted;Nor has He hidden His face from him; But when he cried to Him for help, He heard.

  16. Ending of Psalm 22final del Salmo 22 • 25 From You comes my praise in the great assembly;I shall pay my vows before those who fear Him.26 The afflicted will eat and be satisfied; Those who seek Him will praise the Lord.Let your heart live forever!27 All the ends of the earth will remember and turn to the Lord,And all the families of the nations will worship before You.

  17. Ending of Psalm 22final del Salmo 22 • 28 For the kingdom is the Lord’sAnd He rules over the nations.29 All the prosperous of the earth will eat and worship,All those who go down to the dust will bow before Him,Even he who cannot keep his soul alive.30 Posterity will serve Him;It will be told of the Lord to the coming generation.31 They will come and will declare His righteousnessTo a people who will be born, that He has performed it.

  18. The Fulfillmentel cumplimiento • Just as the feeling of forsakenness was not the end of the psalm it is not the end of Christ’s story! • Jesus quotes the psalm because of the ending, • Jesus is raised from the dead and the rest of the psalm is fulfilled.

  19. Matthew 28Mateo 28 • 16 Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. 17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. (vs. 22, 25- praise; vs. 27, 29- worship) • 18 And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. (vs. 28) 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen. (vs. 27,30-31).

  20. Ending of Psalm 22 Once moreFinal del Salmo 22 una vez más • 27 All the ends of the world         Shall remember and turn to the LORD,          And all the families of the nations          Shall worship before You.28 For the kingdom is the LORD’s,         And He rules over the nations.29 All the prosperous of the earth         Shall eat and worship;          All those who go down to the dust          Shall bow before Him,          Even he who cannot keep himself alive. 30 A posterity shall serve Him.         It will be recounted of the Lord to the next generation,31 They will come and declare His righteousness to a people who will be born,         That He has done this.

  21. Conclusion:la conclusion • Jesus quotes Psalm 22 because he was not forsaken. • Jesus quotes Psalm 22 because he knew the coming deliverance. • Psalm 22 is a messianic psalm • It foreshadows Christ’s death and suffering • It foreshadows Christ’s resurrection and glory • If foreshadows the spread of the Christ’s gospel message.

  22. What this means for us:Lo que esto significa para nosotros: • In Moments where we feel most forsaken, God is with us. • God has not turned his back on us. • “foot prints”

  23. “Footprints in the Sand”Huellas en la arena" • One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord. Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky. In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand. Sometimes there were two sets of footprints. Other times there were one set of footprints. This bothered me because I noticed that during the low periods of my life When I was suffering from anguish, sorrow, or defeat, I could see only one set of footprints. So I said to the Lord, "You promised me, Lord, That if I followed you, you would walk with me always. But I noticed that during the most trying periods of my life There have only been one set of prints in the sand. Why, When I have needed you most, you have not been there for me?"The Lord replied, "The times when you have seen only one set of footprints Is when I carried you."

  24. What this means for us:Lo que esto significa para nosotros: • In Moments where we feel most forsaken God is with us. • God has not turned his back on us. • “foot prints” • When we remain faithful our moments of greatest grief and suffering can result in God’s greatest deliverance. • From the crucifixion God provides the resurrection.
