  2. MAJOR FACTORS • FORMATION OF FAMILY • FIRST MARRIAGE IN DECLINE • DEVORCE IN INCREASE

  3. FORMATION OF FAMILY • formal marriage →stable cohabitation • increase in number of divorced, separated, or never-married single mothers

  4. FIRST MARRIAGE IN DECLINE • first marriages:almost 390,000 in 1970 → 171,900 in 2001 • remarriages: 114,200 in 2001accounting for 40% of all marriages

  5. MOST SIGNIFICANT CHANGE：DEVORCE IN INCREASE • divorce in England and Wales more than doubled from 1971 to 1985(Divorce Reform Act of 1971) • peak around 1945 • 1950s: relatively stable1960s: increase begin1980 and onwards: slow increase

CAUSES FOR THE INCREASE • removal of legal barriers: • Divorce Reform Act • Matrimonial and Family Proceedings Act • higher expectations • changes in women's social position:rise in women’s position & change in women’s role • change in social values • Demographic change:longer life expectancy & younger marriage
