  2. What do you notice? • Romantic poetry is characterized by the “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (Wordsworth 263). • Wordsworth stated that romantic poetry was marked by a “spontaneous overflow of powerful feelings” (263). • One famous poet described poetry in the romantic era as a kind of outpouring of emotions (Wordsworth 263).

  3. MLA In-Text Citations • The last name of the author and the page number that the material came from are the two essential parts of an in-text citation. They usually go inside parentheses at the end of the sentence. • If the author’s last name has already been included in the sentence, just the page number can go in the parentheses. • Paraphrasing, though it is NOT quoting material word for word, still needs to be cited.

  4. Practice • Let’s pretend that this is a quote from page 173 of a book I wrote about teaching: “Every student deserves coffee and donuts on a Monday morning.” • Some of you write a sentence that quotes me where both name and page number are in the parentheses. • Some of you write a sentence that quotes me where the name appears earlier in the sentence and only the page number goes in the parentheses. • Some of you write a sentence that paraphrases my quote and properly cites me.

  5. Journal #12: Modern Heroes • How has the definition of hero changed over the years, if at all? • What qualities/characteristics are part of the definition NOW that didn’t used to be? • What qualities/characteristics are NO LONGER part of the definition that used to be? • Where in the modern world do heroes tend to pop up the most? In what situations or under what circumstances? • Who is one example of a modern (within the last 100 years) hero? Why?
