  3. EMMANUEL VILLAGESUNDAY WORSHIP Pastor Dow, why do you believe in God?"

  4. DOES GOD EXIST? ALL OF US WOULD SAY, “OF COURSE GOD EXISTS. WE BELIEVE IN GOD!”

  5. "Without faith it is impossible to please God, for whoever would approach Him must believe that He exists, and that He rewards those who seek Him." Heb. 11:6

  6. WHY DO SOME NOT BELIEVE IN GOD? • just a projection of human thinking (Feuerbach) • opium of the people (Marx) • the illusion of those who are infantile (Freud) • Besides -all religions are the same aren’t they? They are all right and none is wrong. G O D I S

  7. WHY DO SOME NOT BELIEVE IN GOD? • Science is sufficient - no need for God • Religion is naïve and unsophisticated • Evolution renders God obsolete • Why not just believe in humanity, society, the world - liberty, fraternity, love, brotherhood -besides, “God” limits freedom • “God” is invisible and silent

  8. WHY DO SOME NOT BELIEVE IN GOD? • How can I believe in God in this cold wicked world? Religion is part of the evil! • Circumstances: I stopped believing in God when my mother died... when I learned of the Holocaust…in university…when Jimmy Swaggart fell…after Jonestown…etc….

  9. Is Belief In God Reasonable? • Through the centuries, great thinkers have demonstrated that it is highly reasonable to believe in God - and the God they describe in their theories is, of course, the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ!

  10. from one of the keenest minds ever to think... • “Thou hast made us for thyself, and our heart is restless til it finds rest in Thee…” - St. Augustine, Confessions, I, 1.

  11. Can God Be Known? • John 17:3 - “This is eternal life, that they may know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom You have sent.” • John 4:23 - “They who worship the Father must worship Him in spirit and in truth; the Father seeks such to worship Him.” • He is the seeking subject, we are the object of His search!

  12. HOW DO WE KNOW GOD? • Experience • Reason • Nature • Scripture • Christ • History • Community Why I Believe In God

  28. “Dr. Dow, what is love…?” • Many levels to this discussion. Love for things, animals, jobs, places, people…God • agape love - a love that can be commanded, and chosen, willed. God chooses to love, wills to love, love flows from His being. • Love is caring, desiring the highest and the best for the loved one, giving oneself to bring this about at whatever cost, so that the loved one may become the best they can be.

  29. Psalm 8:4... What are mortals that you should think of us…? Mere humans that you should care for us?
