Influence – good and evil • Influence = a forcethataffectsor has aneffectuponothers. • Certainpeopleexertmuchinfluence: therich, scientists, gov’tofficials, teachers, authors … • ButChristians are the light of theworld … • Illuminate, Eph. 5:8 “youwere once darknessbutnowyou are light in the Lord” … Col. 1:13 • Salt givesflavor, preserves, very beneficial.

  3. Influence of Christ • Jn. 1:4, “In Himwaslife, and thelifewasthe light of men.” • Christ has had more influencethananyotherperson living ordead. • Hislife … example … teaching … mightyworks … death, burial and resurrection. • His ascensión – King of kings, Lord of lords.

  4. Influence – good and evil • The reality of influence… Cannotbedeniedthatitexists… • Commericalworld: advertising, newspaper, magazines, TV • Why? Influences! Movesustobuy.

  5. Influence – good and evil • In the family, the influence of parents and spouses is great, whether good or bad. • Parents influence…Eph. 6:4, “bring them up in the training and admonition of the Lord.” • Spouses influence…Eph. 5:22-28; 1 Pet. 3:1-7

  6. Influence – good and evil • Influence in religious matters … • Our teaching and our example … • Have the purpose of bringing others to the Lord and of confirming and edifying other Christians.

  9. Evil influence in some families • 1 Kings 11:4, “his wives turned his heart after other gods.” • Deut. 17:17, “Neither shall he multiply wives for himself, lest his heart turn away.”

  10. Evil influence in some families • 1 Kings 21:25, The influence that Jezebel had on her husband, King Ahab. • “But there was no one like Ahab who sold himself to do wickedness in the sight of the Lord, because Jezebel his wife stirred him up.”

  11. Evil influence in some families • 1 Kings 22:51 - 53, The bad influence that Ahab and Jesabel had on their son Ahaziah. • Ahaziah the son of Ahab … did evil in the sight of the Lord, and walked in the way of his father and in the way of his mother…”

  12. Evil influence in some families • 2 Chron. 21:6,the bad influence that Ahab’s daughter had on King Jehoram. • “And he walked in the way of the kings of Israel, just as the house of Ahab had done, for he had the daughter of Ahab as a wife; and he did evil in the sight of the Lord.”

  13. Evil influence in some families • 2 Chronicles 22:2-5, theevilinfluencethatthegranddaughter of OmrihadoverAhaziah. • “Ahaziah .. His mother’s name wasAthaliah the granddaughter of Omri. 3 He also walked in the ways of the house of Ahab, for his mother advised him to do wickedly.”

  14. Evil influence in some families • There are valuable lessons in these examples: • In search for wife/husband, consider the factor of their influence over you. • 1 Cor. 10:12, “Let him who thinks he stand take heed lest he fall.”

  15. Influence – good and evil • Our influence as parents… • Our actions, words, attitude ... • Influence the thoughts, values, decisions of children, grandchildren, others.

  16. Evil Influence of Life andTeaching • 1 Kings 16:25, 26, Jeroboam, son of Nebat, whosinned … • and made Israel sin • Becamelike a “proverb” in Israel, wasrepeatedmany times.

  17. False prophets • Jer. 23:13, the evil influence of thefalse prophets on the people. • “And I have seen folly in the prophets of Samaria:They prophesied by BaalAnd caused My people Israel to err.”

Evil Influence of Life andTeaching • Mark 15:11, the evil influence of the Jewish leaders on people. “But the chief priests stirred up the crowd, so that he should rather release Barabbas to them.” • Compare their attitude when Jesus entered the city, Mark 11:9, 10. “Then those who went before and those who followed cried out, saying: “Hosanna! ‘Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord!’

  20. Evil Influence of Life &Teaching • 1 Cor. 15:33, “evilcompanionshipscorruptgoodmorals.” • Includes false doctrine, 2 Tim. 2:17, 18, “And their message will spread like cancer. Hymenaeus and Philetus are of this sort, 18 who have strayed concerning the truth, saying that the resurrection is already past; and they overthrow the faith of some.”

Bible teaching on Good Influence • Congregations with good influence … • Rom. 1:8, “that your faith is spoken of throughout the whole world.” • 1 Thess. 1:8, “For from you the word of the Lord has sounded forth, not only in Macedonia and Achaia, but also in every place. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we do not need to say anything.”

Bible teaching on Good Influence • Hebrews 6:10,  “For God is not unjust to forget your work and labor of[a] love which you have shown toward His name, in that you have ministered to the saints, and do minister.” • Hebrews 11, Manyexamples of goodinfluence. • Let’sbe “imitators of thosewhothroughfaith and patienceinheritthepromises.”

  23. Bible teaching on Good Influence • Hebrews 13:7, Remember those who rule over you, who have spoken the word of God to you, whose faith follow, considering the outcome of their conduct. • Shouldberemembered and theirfaithshouldbeimitated.

The example of Jesus ispreeminent • Hebrews 12:1, “ Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us” • V. 2, “looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.” • Rememberthe “so great a cloud of witnesses” (chap. 11), • But look unto Jesus and runwithperseverance.

The example of Jesus ispreeminent • Philippians 2:5-8, “Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, 6 who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, 7 but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. 8 And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross.” • Ifall of usimitateHim, therewillbepeace and unity in thechurch.

  26. The goodinfluence of theapostle Paul • 1 Cor. 4:16,17, remember “my ways in Christ” • 1 Cor. 11:1, imitatehim as he imitatesChrist. • Phil. 4:9, “The things which you learned and received and heard and saw in me, these do, and the God of peace will be with you.”

  27. The goodinfluence of theotherapostles • In spite of theirfailingsthatwesee in MMLJ, they are outstanding in Acts of theApostles. • Theywereheroes of thefaith, goodexamplesforall.

  28. The goodinfluence of faithfulelders • 1 Pet. 5:2, 3, “Shepherd the flock of God which is among you, serving as overseers, not by compulsion but willingly,[a] not for dishonest gain but eagerly; 3 nor as being lords over those entrusted to you, but being examples to the flock.”

The goodinfluence of faithfulevangelists • 1 Tim. 4:12, “Let no one despise your youth, but be an example to the believers in word, in conduct, in love, in spirit,[a] in faith, in purity.” • Timothy “waswellspoken of,” Acts 16:2. • Phil. 2:20, “For I have no one like-minded, who will sincerely care for your state.”

  30. The goodinfluence of manyChristians • Stephen, Barnabas (Acts 11:24, “a good man, full of the Holy Spirit and faith …” • Epaphras, Onesiphorus, • Aquilla and Priscilla, Phoebe (a long list in Rom. 16), • Gaius, Epaphroditus, Stephanas… • and many others.

The goodinfluence of manyChristians • THESE are the “light of theworld” • Phil. 2:14, 15, “Do all things without complaining and disputing, 15 that you may become blameless and harmless, children of God without fault in the midst of a crooked and perverse generation, among whom you shine as lights in the world.” • These show “theway” tothe Lord!

  32. Whatistheeffect of my influence? • Upon my family? Upon my friends? • Where am I leading people by my life & teaching? • Toward God or toward the world?
