Aberdeen Area Tribal Chairmen’s Health Board • Serves as a formal representative board for Aberdeen tribes to communicate & participate with IHS. • Provides advocacy on behalf of tribal members in regard to health issues. • Provides epidemiological research and serves as a repository for American Indian data. • Promotes health education. • Provides direct services to tribes

  4. Northern Plains Tobacco Prevention Project • An Initiative of AATCHB to Specifically address the issue of chronic commercial tobacco use among Northern Plains Tribal members.

  5. NPTPP Mission • To provide Northern Plains tribes with training and technical assistance to promote tobacco prevention and cessation health, and serve as a resource in the reduction of tobacco related morbidity and mortality among American Indian people.

  6. Current NPTPP Priorities • Prevent the initiation of tobacco use among the young and pregnant mothers. • Promote cessation health. • Eliminate nonsmokers exposure to secondhand smoke. • Eliminate health disparities among Native American people that are a result of tobacco use.

  7. Traditional Role of Tobacco • NPTPP acknowledges the traditional and sacred role of tobacco. • Tobacco has been used for prayer, offerings, gift-giving, & medicine. • Traditional tobacco is a blend of natural plants such as red willow, mullein, & bearberry. This This =

  8. Habitual Tobacco Use • Habitual tobacco use is positively correlated with a number of health risks such as lung cancer, heart disease and stroke. • Habitual tobacco use is the most preventable cause of death in the US. • Habitual tobacco use is the target for intervention.

  10. Tobacco Education • NPTPP promotes basic tobacco education & awareness of tobacco and its meaning for American Indian communities. • Health consequences of habitual commercial tobacco use among American Indians are spotlighted.

  11. Training & Technical Assistance to Tribes • NPTPP assists tribes to develop capacity to plan, implement, evaluate, and sustain comprehensive tobacco programs.

  12. Prevention Resources • NPTPP promotes innovative tobacco prevention initiatives around the region and serves as a clearinghouse for tobacco prevention material.

  13. Smoking Cessation Resources • NPTPP provides training and technical assistance on cessation curriculum and disseminates cessation resources to tribal communities. • NPTPP collaborates with states to promote use of state quitlines

  14. Tobacco Use Surveillance • NPTPP assists tribes and states to conduct the Tobacco surveillance. • Currently conducting the ATS in Cheyenne River and Sisseton-Wahpeton. • Surveillance helps to inform tobacco control programs.

  15. Indian Teens Against Tobacco Use Conference • Provided tobacco education for 50 youth. • Theme: Zi to Canli • Conference curriculum reflects the four aspects of wellness: physical, spiritual, mental, emotional. • Students produced tobacco prevention material in tiyospaye groups.
