  2. Raising an Army and Navy • American Expeditionary Force: American soldiers who went to France to serve under General John J. Pershing • Wilson wanted the AEF to be distinct and separate • Selective Service Act: law required all males between the ages of 21 – 30 to sign up for military service

  3. By the end of 1918, nearly 3 million men had been drafted.

  4. Women in the Military • For the first time women served in the military as: • 1. clerks • 2. nurses • 3. interpreters • 4. switchboard operators • 5. entertained troops • 6. drove ambulances

  5. American Ships Make a Difference • Attacks by German U-boats inspire the Allies to create 2 new defenses: • Convoy system - a heavy guard of destroyers that escorted merchant ships across the Atlantic in groups. • North Sea Minefield - laid a barrier of 70,000 mines in the North Sea, made the German u-boat access to the Atlantic almost impossible.

  6. American Troops Enter the War • June, 1917 – 14,000 American troops finally join the Allies in France • Boosted the morale of the battle-weary Allies

  7. Pushing the Germans Back • Second Battle of Marne: summer, 1918 was the turning point of the war. • Meuse-Argonne offensive (fall, 1918) marked the final massive drive to push back the German line

  8. American Heroism • Helps turn the tide of the war • 1. Alvin York – American soldier captured 132 Germans • 2. Eddie Rickenbacker – “Ace” pilot, shot down 26 enemy planes • 3. African Combat Units – 369th, 370th, 371st, and 372nd were awarded France’s highest honor for valor – the Croix de Guerre

  9. Germany Stops Fighting • November 11, 1918 at 11:00 am (the 11th day of the 11th month) – Germany agreed to an armistice (an end to the fighting) • This is why we celebrate Veteran’s Day every year on November 11
