History

  • 1st Century - Hero of Alexandria in Roman Egypt

  • 1551 - Taqi al-Din in Ottoman Egypt, who described it as a prime mover for rotating a spit

  • 1648 - by John Wilkins

  • 1660 – by Samuel Pepys

  • 1629 - Italian Giovanni Branca

  • 1884 - The modern steam turbine was invented in 1884 by the Englishman Sir Charles Parsons, whose first model was connected to a dynamo that generated 7.5 kW of electricity




Steam turbine types
Steam Turbine Types

1- Straight Condensing turbines which allow steam to expand to the lowest possible pressure before it is condensed into water.

2- Back-pressure and topping turbines in which steam is exhausted before it is fully expanded. Generally, provide low pressure steam for heating or process.

3- Extraction turbine in which steam is extracted (controlled or uncontrolled) during the expansion process for use in othe application such as district heating.
