  1. Types of Bonds Objectives: SWBAT: Identify and describe the formation of ionic bonds. SWBAT: Predict the charged ion an atom will form. Bellringer: Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for Fluorine, Phosphorus, Beryllium

  2. Valence Electron Game • Directions: • Compete against your table partner • Goal: Be the first to circle the correct number of valence electrons for a given atom. • On the following slides are elements. When we click on the slide, circle the number on your scorecard that corresponds to the number of valence electrons in the element.

  3. O 6

  4. Be 2

  5. F 7

  6. C 4

  7. Li 1

  10. + = Na Cl NaCl Compounds • A compound is a pure substance made up of two or more elements in which the elements are chemically combined

  11. Chemical Bond = the attraction that holds atoms together • Why do atoms bond? • Atoms bond in order to become stable (fill their outer shell)

  12. Octet Rule • All atoms want to become super stable, awesome, Noble gasses! • In other words, all atoms want 8 valence electrons.

  13. Types of Chemical Bonds • Ionic bond = electrons are TRANSFERRED between atoms • Occurs between metal and nonmetal

  14. Types of Chemical Bonds • 2) Covalent bond = electrons are SHARED between atoms • Occurs between nonmetal and nonmetal

  15. Ion = charged atom Anions are negative Ca+ions are posi+ive

  16. Ionic Bonds • Sodium has one valence electron it wants to lose • Chlorine has 7 valence electrons, so it wants to gain one more to make it to eight. : Na · · Cl : :

  17. Ionic Bonds • The Sodium atom donates its one valence electron to Chlorine. : Na · · Cl : :

  18. Ionic Bonds • Now, both atoms have a full outer electron cloud. • Na is now positively charged = cation (+1 because it now has 1 more PROTON than electrons) • Cl is now negatively charged = anion (-1 because it now has 1 more ELECTRON than protons) • The 2 atoms are held together by the electrostatic attractions (think of magnets!) : Na+1 · Cl-1 : · :

  19. Ionic Bonds • Sodium and Chloride are now ionically bonded to form a new compound known as sodium chloride (NaCl). • This is known to most of us as Table Salt. : Na : Cl : :

  20. Ionic Bonds • Chat Chum practice- • Group work- Level 2- Raise hand for help! • Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for • K • Cl • Show with arrows the movement of the electrons. • Redraw the atoms with the new number of valence electrons • Show the CHARGE on the atoms (which is the cation and which is the anion) • Draw the bonded molecule!

  21. Ionic Bonds • Chat Chum practice- • Group work- Level 2- Raise hand for help! • Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for • Li • Br • Show with arrows the movement of the electrons. • Redraw the atoms with the new number of valence electrons • Show the CHARGE on the atoms (which is the cation and which is the anion) • Draw the bonded molecule!

  22. Ionic Bonds • Who wants to draw their process on the board?

  23. Challenge Problem! • Individual Practice- • Level 0/Level 1 if you need help- Ask Chat Chum first, then raise hand! • Draw the Lewis Dot Structure for • Mg • O • Show with arrows the movement of the electrons. • Redraw the atoms with the new number of valence electrons • Show the CHARGE on the atoms (which is the cation and which is the anion? ) • Draw the bonded molecule!

  24. Homework! • Practice: Ionic Bonding
