  7. Assessment in Texas Is Changing The 15% grading issue will impact grades in a negative way. Many kids will be retesting and that is okay given the changing nature of instruction. Parents must understand that we are going to assess your kids and not just “test” them. Preparing Student to be College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready !

  8. What tests will students have to take? The high school level STAAR tests are COURSE tests, NOT grade level tests Preparing Student to be College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready !

  11. Rigor Is Not A Disease Many people associate rigor with more work. The bottom line is classrooms will expect more this year and schools are going to need parental support throughout this process. Expect that teachers demand rigorous, challenging work from your child. Preparing Student to be College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready !

  12. STAAR will be significantly more “rigorous” than TAKS What does rigor mean? Preparing Student to be College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready !

  13. What does “more rigorous” mean? • The questions are more complex and require more thinking. • What is most important for a student to learn in a grade level will have more questions on the test. • The test will be longer. • But it will have a 4 hour time limit … Preparing Student to be College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready !

  23. The PLTW middle and high school STEM education programs provide the inspiration for a new generation of innovators, the practical skills and hands-on experience to make students’ knowledge count in the real world, and the basis for the next generation of leadership in the sciences, technology, engineering, and mathematics. PLTW develops motivated, well-rounded students by instilling confidence, stressing the importance of self-discovery, encouraging innovative problem solving and critical thinking, teaching team building, and rewarding creativity. • Students will develop skills essential for achievement in the classroom and success in college and at work. • Not to mention: • PLTW students achieve significantly higher scores in reading, mathematics, and science. • PLTW graduates earn higher GPAs as college freshmen. • PLTW graduates are 5 to 10 times more likely to study engineering and technology. 28. Calculating Cumulative Score Let’s say a scale score of 2100 is passing … Let’s say the student retakes the Geometry EOC at the next retest opportunity after receiving these results … For math … Algebra 1 = 2100 Geometry = 2150 Algebra 2 = 2100 Cumulative Score = 2116 • For math … • Algebra 1 = 2100 • Geometry = 2000 • Algebra 2 = 2100 • Cumulative Score = 2066 Preparing Student to be College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready !

  29. But that might not be enough … Let’s take the same cumulative score after the student passed the Geometry retest … If the Recommended High School Graduation Plan requires a cumulative score of 2150 … For math … Algebra 1 = 2100 Geometry = 2150 Algebra 2 = 2200 Cumulative Score = 2150 • For math … • Algebra 1 = 2100 • Geometry = 2150 • Algebra 2 = 2100 • Cumulative Score = 2116 Preparing Student to be College Ready, Career Ready, and Life Ready !
