What must we do before we can hear the radio clearly?
Listening to the Holy Ghost may be compared to listening to a radio. Before we can hear what Heavenly Father wants us to know, we must be tuned in to the Holy Ghost. Other names for the Holy Ghost are the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Truth.
Listen to the lesson to learn how the Holy Ghost helped Joseph Smith and Oliver Cowdery.
Joseph and Emma Smith lived on a little farm near a radio. Before we can hear what Heavenly Father wants us to know, we must be tuned in to the Holy Ghost. Other names for the Holy Ghost are the Holy Spirit and the Spirit of Truth.

told how people could help Jesus. They should
love Jesus. They should work hard to teach the gospel.
They should love and help other people.
People who want to help Jesus should also pray and have faith. Jesus said people who help Him will be blessed.
Joseph’s father went home and tried to do the things Jesus had told him to do. He shared the gospel with
many of his family members.
Joseph had to work on his farm. He also needed to translate the gold plates. It was too much work for him to do alone, so he prayed and asked Heavenly
Father for help.
Joseph knew that the translation was not going as fast as it needed to, so he prayed and asked Heavenly Father for help. Read aloud what the Lord answered in Doctrine and Covenants 10:4.
A few months later Joseph was told to stop translating until the Lord told him to start again. The Lord promised Joseph that if he did this, the Lord would provide help with the translation.
For many days Oliver thought about what he had been told. Finally he prayed privately. He felt a peaceful assurance that Joseph Smith was a prophet of God (see D&C 6:22–23) and also felt impressed that he would be a scribe for Joseph Smith.
Oliver believed Joseph and said he would help translate of the Holy Ghost. One morning he was upset with Emma over something she had done. When he tried to translate, he found that he could not translate at all. Joseph went out into the orchard to pray and ask the Lord why he could not translate. He soon realized that he needed to make peace with Emma before he could have the help of the Holy Ghost. He came back into the house and asked Emma’s forgiveness. He was then able to continue with the translation.
the gold plates. As Joseph read the words out loud, Oliver
wrote them on paper. Joseph and Oliver worked hard.
Jesus taught Joseph and Oliver many things. He said they should seek wisdom and eternal life, not riches. He also
said they should learn about God and help people learn the gospel. They should be faithful and do good things.
If they did, they could live with Heavenly Father forever.
Jesus said Oliver should always be Joseph’s friend and should seek wisdom and eternal life, not riches. He also
help him in difficult times. Jesus also said Oliver could
learn to translate like Joseph. The Holy Ghost would
help Oliver translate if Oliver had enough faith.
With Oliver assisting, the translation of the Book of Mormon went faster. After working as scribe for some time, Oliver wanted to translate. He was given permission to translate but failed when he tried. Oliver thought that the ability to translate would be given to him by merely asking Heavenly Father for it, but he learned that it required great mental and spiritual effort. The ability to translate had to come through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost.
Jesus said Oliver had not asked for God’s help in the right way. Jesus told Joseph Smith how Oliver and all people can get help from God
When people need help, they should Cowdery through Joseph Smith in think carefully
about what to do. They should decide what they think is the right thing to do.
Then they should Cowdery through Joseph Smith in ask God if it is right. Listen--If it is right, they
will feel good in their hearts. They will know it is right.
If it is wrong, they will not feel good in their hearts. Cowdery through Joseph Smith in
Oliver did not try to translate the Book of Mormon Cowdery through Joseph Smith in
again. Instead, he wrote down the words as Joseph
translated them. Jesus said Oliver would be blessed
for helping Joseph.
