  2. Prepare • Build your case • Don’t be bashful, but don’t be boastful • Let the numbers do the talking • List the accomplishments you’ve reached that have helped company • Outperformed in sales – provide figures • Remind boss of new accounts

  3. Prepare • Learn what company can afford • Read quarterly earnings report • If there have been layoffs, don’t ask for much and don’t expect much • Look at typical, average salaries for your same position in your same region.

  4. Prepare • Summarize your pitch for a raise in a short written statement • Have a colleague read it

  5. Timing • If you don’t receive an annual review, make your pitch when your boss has time to listen • Not first thing Monday morning or late Friday afternoon • Ask to set up a meeting via email

  6. Fall Back Plan • Tailor your pitch • If the company can’t afford to give you a raise, consider other options • Education • Child care • Health coverage • Paid vacation time

  7. When All Else Fails • Don’t quit • Don’t give up • Ask your boss “What do I need to get the raise I think I deserve?” • If things don’t go well, consider that your performance and attitude could be limiting your pay • Change your work habits!
