  2. Overview – 1st Day 1. Attendance 2. Introduction to 21st century science (20 min.) 3. Introduction to AP Biology & Mr. Boswell (15 min.) 4. Summer Project Insights (5 min.)

  3. Baby gorilla reacts to a cold stethoscope

  4. Introduction to 21st Century SCIENCE

  5. 20th Century SCIENCE

  6. Alba – GFP bunny • Expired in 2002 • “Transgenic art” • AP Lab #6

  7. Human Genome Project • Completed in 2003 • Joint Genome Institute (Walnut Creek, CA) • Sequenced entire human genome (DNA) • Cost $2.7 billion • 2004, Celera (J. Craig Venter) = $300,000,000 (11%) • 2010, Illumina (San Diego, CA) = $14,500 (0.0005%) • 2013, $1,000 or less

  8. 21st Century Therapies • Gleevec – Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia • 1 pill a day • Sprycel & Tasigna • In 2010, Oncept DNA Vaccine • Canine Oral Melanoma • Transdermal application • June 2010, “siRNA ‘Cure’ for Ebola?” (Geisbert et al.) • May 20, 2010, first “synthetic” life form is created

  9. 2013 Biotechnology • U. Pitt group produces human heart cells from iPSCs that spontaneously beats on its own • Human Liver tissue regrown from iPSCs • Surgeons at Duke University implanted a bioengineered blood vessel into patient • Netherlands researchers produced lab-grown burger from ONLY cow stem cells.

  10. Stanford University • Newest department: Bioengineering • Stanford has a $1,000,000,000 commitment • Last department added: 23 years ago • Computer Science • Silicon Valley • MIT • Broad Institute of MIT & Harvard (2004) • Koch Institute for Integrative Cancer Research (2008)

  11. Introduction to AP BIology

  12. The Essence of AP Biology • “"if you want easy college Bio credit do dual-enrollment, but if you want to really learn the process and practice of Biology, take AP Bio.” • From AP Teacher Community on collegeboard.org

  13. 2013 AP Biology Results •  Pass Rate = 88% • “5”s = 10% • Students = 100 • There will be zero 1s or 2s this year.

  14. Why this class is difficult… 1. Honors Biology ≠ AP Biology -- Biology knowledge base may be deficient 2. 42 Chapters (over 1,000 pages) 3. 3 credits vs. 8 credits for college 4. Significant Mathematics focus (Chi-Square Test, etc.) 5. Application & Evaluation Test Questions

  15. Why this class not difficult… 1. Clear expectations • Vocabulary & Objectives 2. Information is readily available 3. Course Materials sourced from 5 Biology textbooks 4. Course materials are easily accessible 5. Few complicated concepts

  16. What is a College Level Course? • Student-Driven Learning • “students are expected to work independently outside the class” • Role of teacher is to highlight some important points • Will NOT cover every concept in class • Homework will consist of videos or readings that need to be completed before class

  17. Class Discussions • You WILL be called on to attempt an answer • I want to hear what you have to say • Please make all questions and comments relevant to the content discussion • If your question is off topic, write it down and ask it later

  18. Introduction to Mr. Boswell

  19. AP Biology Background • Undergrad: Philosophy & Biochemistry • Masters: Medical Economics & Epidemiology • HHMI (Howard Hughes Medical Institute) Cohort • Inaugural Fellow (2008) @ University of Florida • AP Summer Institute (2007, 2008, 2009, & 2012) • AP Fellows Grant & Stanford University • AP Annual Conference (2008, 2012) • AP Biology Review at 2012 National Science Bowl • Broward County 2013 AP Biology Review • Test Item Contributor for 2014 AP Biology Exam

  20. SUMMER PROJECT & Tests

  21. Summer Project • The worksheet is due by 11:59pm on 8/23/13 • Email to apbio1314@gmail.com • The Online Assessments must be complete by 11:59pm on 8/23/13 • In Class Assessment: • Biology – Wednesday (8/21/13) • Chemistry – Friday (8/23/13)

  22. BUM Insights • Nucleoid / Cell Wall present in bacterial cells? • Prokaryotes? • Does Golgi Body (Apparatus) contain ribosomes? • Need to know the number of chromosomes, chromatids, and chromatin in each stage of mitosis • What is the longest phase of the cell cycle?

  23. BUM In Class Assessment • 30 Questions • 8 Multiple Correct (Select ALL of the following…) • 22 Multiple Choice • Spread evenly between 3 topics covered in the BUM • About ½ of the questions are application • Review the Formative Assessment & Worksheet • Think about what would happen if an organelle or molecule were to malfunction. • Consider various pathologies of cell organelles, molecular properties of water, and cell cycle

  24. CUS Insights • Polar means it can dissolve in ______ • Amino acids can act as BOTH an _____ and a _____ • Which functional groups act like acids? Bases? • Learn Polar bonds and polar molecule rules • Which molecules exhibit Van der Waal forces? • Which functional groups have a carbon double bonded to an oxygen?

  25. CUS In Class Assessment • 26 Questions • 16 Multiple Choice • 10 Multiple Correct • Score is out of 25 (one question is effectively Xtra credit) • Review the Formative Assessment & Worksheet • Functional groups are important

  26. Upcoming Tests • 8/28/13 – First Test • TEST Q1-01 (15%) • Covers Only Chapters 3-5 • Focus is on CH 5 • Application & Pathologies • 10/14/13 • Cumulative Test (20%) • Afterschool on Monday 10/14/13 • 110 students in Auditorium & 60 students in Media Center
