  1. Short Story: Losing My Cool Losing My Cool People face some type of conflict everyday of their life. An interpersonal conflict is an expressed struggle between at least two interdependent people who perceive incompatible goals, scare resources, or interference in the achievement of goals (Beebe, Beebe, and Redmond 221). When a conflict happens, the relationship between the parties of the conflict may become weakened or strengthened. However, when a conflict is handled well, the conflict can be productive and lead to a deeper understanding of the situation at hand. A person comes across at least one incident in our lives that causes them to react to a conflict where he or she loses their cool. A situation at my daughter's school caused me to lose control of any of my cognitive thinking processes. A classmate of hers put something in her water at break time and allowed her to drink it. Although, she informed the teacher, I never received a phone call or text informing me of the situation. An hour had passed by the time I found out. By the time I hunted down the principal, I was about ready to blow my top. I walked up to her and demanded a reason why I was not informed of the incident involving my daughter. By this time, I was so heated; I'm sure steam was coming from the top of my head. She asked me to take a deep breath and tell her what had upset me so much. By the time I finished, she was as upset as I was. The student was found and the substance seized. My daughter's pediatrician was called to see ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  3. Poem Analysis: We Real Cool By Gwendolyn Brooks There are many different poems all over the world. Some are old with lots of meaning and some are newer with no meaning at all. Poems are made up of different elements to make the poem flow. All of these devices are important and are necessary to have to make a poem extravagant. A poem that I enjoyed in this poetry section is "Resume" by Dorothy Parker and a poem that I did not like very much was, "We Real Cool" by Gwendolyn Brooks. Resume was written in 1926. I believe that one of the reasons why I like this poem so much is because it is meaningful and takes a serious matter, but is a light verse at the same time. There are many things about this poem that make it work and flow well. Parker uses lots of imagery throughout the whole poem. I get a fantastic image when we read "Rivers are damp" (2). In this line Dorothy is talking about someone trying to commit suicide by drowning themselves, this is not the best image, but I still get a clear idea of what is trying to happen. That is not the only line that creates a picture, the words also provide a great image. All of the words in this poem provide a harsh representation and the words that do this are, razors, rivers, acids, pills, guns, nooses, and gas. Another device that Parker...show more content... This title could be read as resume and we get the impression to continue something. After reading the poem we get the idea that the author is saying to resume your life, finish living. When we put accents in the word we get résumé. Most people may think that this is an odd title choice because a résumé is something that is used for jobs, like a list of accomplishments. Failed suicide attempts are not considered accomplishments to people, but a list of accomplishments from the speaker's point of view from the struggles that they were dealing with. The word play between these two words help the poem maintain a balance between a serious matter and light ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  4. Death and We Real Cool Essay Death and We Real Cool "The sluggard's craving will be the death of him, because his hands refuse to work" (Proverbs 21:25). The Bible makes a very clear statement in this passage as to how being lazy can be the cause of one's death. "We Real Cool" is about seven African–American high school dropouts who want everybody else to think that they are cool. These teenagers explain how they stay out late playing pool, fighting, sinning and drinking. Though they think they have everybody else fooled, they know themselves that the destructive behavior they are taking part in will lead to their death. In "We Real Cool," Gwendolyn Brooks uses denotation and sound devices to suggest that although some African–Americans may often think...show more content... The ingenious way Brooks uses denotation in this poem helps explain that although some African– American teenagers may often think of themselves as being cool for dropping out of school, staying out late, fighting, and drinking they know in actuality that these corrupt things they are taking part of will lead to a broken, shortened life. Brooks uses sound devices to suggest that although some African–Americans may often think of themselves as being cool for dropping out of school, which gives them time to engage in sinful activities will inevitably result in a broken, short life. Brooks uses pauses in the middle of lines called cesura's to aid in helping the audience see how the brokenness of ideas and sound contributes to the brokenness felt by these African–American teenagers. We Lurk late. We Strike straight. Here, in lines 5–6, it is obvious when read how the brokenness in the middle of the line contributes to the meaning of the poem. Brooks also uses run–on lines to emphasize in sound the fact that when African–American teenagers decide it is cool to drop out they are beginning a headlong run into death. The never–ending brokenness that is shown by the run–on lines gives these misbehaved teenagers an excuse to sin and ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  6. Cool Story Ginsberg Analysis As different eras come and go we can usually decide what they consisted of, more specifically of what was cool in their era. For example, Allen Ginsberg and the rest of the Beatniks were key figures of the Beat Generation and are the people who come to mind when thinking of cool in the 1950's and 60's. By looking at them and everyone else from this generation, once can begin to understand what it was like to live in this era – it was clear people wanted to get out of the pretentious bubble that society was enclosing them in. But what does cool or hip even mean in present day? In "Cool Story" by Carl Wilson, he analyzes who or what can be seen as cool today and if its meaning has changed, from having context behind the word or if it is just...show more content... The chaos that goes on in finding the next big thing to sell creates the nostalgia that this era is feeling therefore is what became cool. One can look at what has become cool when it begins to be sold everywhere after a while such as the clothes and gadgets from previous decades. Because people like to look back at the things they once enjoyed, the market is using it as a tool to make money as has happened with almost everything that was considered cool. This nostalgia then shows the aura of this era – exhaustion of mass consumption. So in a world that seems to be spinning too fast, with information being thrown at you all the time, nostalgia helps ease the mind and lets you think of what may seem like simpler times. Although today, there is much more exploitation of what is "cool", there is still context behind the word in different aspects categorized under cool. The nostalgia is us trying to hold on to something that we haven't realized was long gone. Therefore Carl Wilson's image of there being some type of competition to the death to find the next big thing is true at least for the corporation. The way in which everything is moving so quickly has led people to recollect things from the fringes once again to help us remain sane. To think back to what it was to have one thing that you could relate to with the rest of your generation rather than nothing at ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  7. We Real Cool Gwendolyn Brooks Analysis "We Real Cool," by Gwendolyn Brooks is a fervent short poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that create a steady meter giving the poem a catchy jazz like quality. Although the poem is short, it packs a powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the 1960's when the poem was written, many teens especially young African– American men felt misunderstood and like the world was set up for them to fail. On the surface, it appears this poem is a mere description of young adults that are misjudged. The deeper message of this poem addresses the dangers of peer pressure, and its detrimental effects to self–identity because of the disconnect between society and youth of that time. Peer pressure can take place whenever people gather and spend frequent time together. Most people are subject to its effects and often experience it because of shared experiences or they share the same perspective on life. This becomes dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual's way of thinking or behavior. When an individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will follow the crowd even if they know that they are participating in something immoral; this is demonstrated in "We Real Cool." As the poem begins, the reader is introduced to the subjects of the poem, "The Pool Players. Seven at the ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  8. What Does It Means To Be Cool Cool Man! How do you define cool? What does it mean to be cool? I'm talking about being, ' In with the in crowd' cool. Growing up the word cool, was not in the language yet as far as being defined 'far out' cool. I actually didn't start perceiving Cool' until the1960s when the Hippies started saying it to each other. I started using it when no one I knew was around me to hear me say it. I thought I was cool saying it but not sure if I was qualified to use it, not being sure if I were cool. I found out that I might have not been cool when others started laughing at me for interjecting 'Cool man!' during conversations. I still wanted to be cool, so I looked for other things that were cool to be involved in. In the movie' "The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly," I watched Clint Eastwood with that little cigar in his mouth. I was in complete awe,' Now that's cool I thought. The next day I got myself some of those little stogies, popped one into my mouth and looked into the mirror. 9. For something to be considered as cool, it needs to gain the interest of people and has to manage to satisfy them because without interest and satisfaction, something will not be taken into account to be valued. Authors of Cool: How the Brain 's Hidden Quest for Cool Drives Our, Economy and Shapes Our World, Steven Quartz and Anette Asp, emphasis how cool can change in society to conform to what is currently important in the economy. "Cool's social signals changed to reflect the qualities highly valued in a knowledge economy. Whereas rebel cool was all about rebelliousness, DotCool is about unconventionality, creativity, and learning" (Steven Quartz and Anette Asp 213). It is important to note that creativity and unconventionality gain the interest of people and learning achieves a fulfillment of knowledge among people that ends in satisfaction. In today's modern society, things need to be up to date with the newest and latest trends, which are usually associated with fashion, technology, music, activities, and more to be labeled as cool and sold in the economy. The media tends to target these areas to make sure the public is well aware of what is currently popular, so people can become curious and look more into it to eventually buy it. Focusing more on technology, the media has promoted consumer items such as iPhones and have managed to intrigue a lot of the youth population especially teenagers. IPhones are mainly attracted to the youth for the reason that they ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  10. Poetry Essay "We Real Cool", Gwendolyn Brooks The poem "We Real Cool" is a very powerful poem, although expressed with very few words. To me, this poem describes the bottom line of the well known "ghetto life". It describes the desperate and what they need, other than the usual what they want, money. Without actually telling us all about the seven young men, it does tell us about them. The poem tells of the men's fears, their ambitions, and who they think they are, versus who they really are. The poem begins with the word "We", which is the only line in the poem that begins in this such manor, although the word "we" is repeated six more times throughout the poem. The "we" that I believe is represented at the beginning is the...show more content... They feel as if they are all, "real cool". However, as the poem continues, the repeated "We" is seen not at the beginning, but at the end of each line. This simultaneously displays a certain aspect that was not seen in the first line. It shows certain confusions and distinct uncertainties about the group's identity, or even as an example of protesting too much, whether there's a group identity at all. Who is "We" that they are so insistent about? Repeated as it is, the "We" gets smaller and smaller. She is saying that in life it may seem like "we", but it all comes to a point where the "we" gradually starts representing one individual, rather than a whole group. The poet has in fact said that the "we" is supposed to be read in a small and uncertain way, thus the reason for the unpunctuated "we" at the end of each line after the initial "We" in the beginning of the poem. That word kind of becomes a question, as well as a refrain. The unity that was seen in the beginning becomes less and less apparent as the poem continues. Brooks continues the poem saying, "We / Left school". Making the hopelessness of this scenario even more obvious. Brooks not only arranges the wording in this poem to show a desperate need, but she speaks of one as well. The fact that these seven young men have no education shows exactly how unpromising their futures are or are going to be if they continue down a path trying to impress each other ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  11. Cool INTRODUCTION WHAT IS 'LOVE'? Love is a special and complicated emotion which is quite difficult to understand. Most people believe the love revolves around the heart but it actually occurs; in the brain. Love is a variety of different feelings, states, and attitudes; that ranges from interpersonal affection, "I love my mother" to insight," I love that meal". Love is an emotion of a strong attraction and personal attachment which can also be a virtue; representing human kindness, compassion, and affection. Love can be displayed towards other humans, one's self and animals. The word love can have a variety of related but distinct meanings in different contexts. There are four different types of love, AGAPE, EROS, STORGE, and PHILIA....show more content... The parable tells of a man traveling from Jerusalem to Jericho, and while on the way he is robbed of everything he had, including his clothing, and is beaten to within an inch of his life. That road was treachorously winding and was a favorite hideout of robbers and thieves. He spends no time describing the priest and only tells of how he showed no love or compassion for the man by failing to help him and passing on the other side of the road so as not to get involved. If there was anyone who would have known God's law of love, it would have been the priest. By nature of his position, he was to be a person of compassion, desiring to help others. Unfortunately, "love" was not a word for him that required action on the behalf of someone else. The next person to pass by in the Parable of the Good Samaritan is a Levite, and he does exactly what the priest did: he passes by without showing any compassion. Again, he would have known the law, but he also failed to show the injured man compassion. The next person to come by is the Samaritan, the one least likely to have shown compassion for the man. Samaritans were considered a low class of people by the Jews since they had intermarried with non–Jews and did not keep all the law. Therefore, Jews would have nothing to do with them. We do not know if the injured man was a Jew or Gentile, but it made no difference to the Samaritan; he did not consider the man's race or religion. The ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  12. It Was A Cool Fall Day Essay It was a cool fall day. Just after lunch on Thursday, and as I waited for Wworld Hhistory to start, a group of students talked about an upcoming party that was planned for Friday after the game. A friend sitting near me, asked if I was going to the party. Before he even finished his sentence, he added, "Well, it's not like you would go anyway.". To which I replied "yeah... right". He just assumed that I would be going home that night to do homework and study for all of my classes. It was on that Thursday that I realized I was stereotyped as the guy who does not have any fun and is only focused on school and getting good grades. This was strange to me as I typically put off doing any homework until the night before it is due and get good grades without working too hard for it. This stereotype is typically put on people who get good grades and normally have their homework turned in on time. Some think these people go home and do homework, study, and do extra credit. They are often viewed as being organized and well ordered. These types of people are not often viewed for being involved in school sports. They are also viewed as as not popular. The media, like most stereotypes, helps to reinforce this stereotype. Most television shows and movies that has teenagers in school depicts one or more characters this way. I have done well in most of my classes throughout school. School has never been very difficult to me. The only class that I have ever had ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  13. Essay On Being Cool To be cool is a very ambiguous attribute in the sense that it can have many forms depending on the context in which it is being referenced to the meaning behind being cool differs from person to person because each person has a different perspective on what they view as being cool. There is no single concept of cool. One of the essential characteristics of cool is that it is able to mutate and changes or varies over time and among the different cultures and generations. The only constant aspect is that being cool is seen as positive and highly desirable, but in what way does the consumption of stuff contribute to being cool? Is the desire of being cool a contributing factor in motivating people to consume stuff? Mankind create only to provide for others and to make their lives and everyone else's' lives around them easier to live, but is satisfying our basic needs to only reason for consumerism?...show more content... For the sake of this essay we will use a more anthropological definition which is: the meaningful use people make of the stuff that are associated with them, but there is a difference between consumption and consumerism. Consumption is the act of consuming something whereas consumerism is the materialistic attachment to possession. Consumerism is seen as a religion, a way of life. Consumerism is seen as the manifestation of the apparently very much present act of consumption (Miles, 1998, p. 3). Is it not then that consumption is not the problem but the manifestation which is consumerism is? Consumerism is now seen as an act nothing short of being a religion. It is apparent in our everyday lives and it structures our everyday experiences. Everyday life in the developed world appears to be dominated by the relationship we have with consumer goods (Miles, 1998, p. ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

The poem is written in a very simple manner, which gives us a clear picture of the youth's considering themselves as a real cool and involving in a fun as well as risky activities. The poem is the perfect example of what can be accomplished in a very short space with a simple everyday language using only few well–placed words. The simplicity of the language gives us the feeling that it is a real time creation of an author when she was having fun with friends, drinking gin, staying out late at night, enjoying jazz and so on. 17. Gwendolyn Brooks' We Real Cool Essay Gwendolyn Brooks' "We Real Cool" The poem 'We Real Cool' by Gwendolyn Brooks is a stream of the thoughts of poor inner city African–Americans who have adopted a hoodlum lifestyle. Though many can have different interpretations of this poem, it is fair to look at the life and career or the works and influences of Gwendolyn Brooks. The life and art of the black American poet, Gwendolyn Brooks, began on June 7, 1917 when she was born in Topeka, Kansas. She was the first child of Keziah Corine Wims and David Anderson Brooks. When she was four, her family moved to their permanent residence on Champlin Avenue in Chicago. Her deep interest in poetry consumed much of her early life. For instance, Brooks began rhyming at the age of seven....show more content... After a lifetime of skilled verse writing, Brooks died of cancer in December 2000 when she was 83 years old. The works of Gwendolyn Brooks has gone through several changes throughout her career. When she first published in 1945, she was eager to be understood by strangers. In her last two poetical collections, however, she has dumped that attitude and gone ?black?. Her change then led her from a major publishing house to smaller black ones. While some critics found an angrier tone in her work, elements of protest had always been present in her writing. Her poetry moves from traditional forms including sonnets, ballads, variations of the Chaucerian and Spenserian stanzas, and the rhythm of the blues to the most unrestricted free verse. To sum up, the popular forms of English poetry appear in her work, but there is some testing as she puts together lyric, narrative, and dramatic poetic forms. In her narrative poetry, the stories are simple but usually go beyond the restrictions of place. In her dramatic poetry, the characters are often memorable because they are everyday survivors not heroes. Her characters are drawn from the underclass of the nation's black slums. Like many urban writers, Brooks has recorded the impact of city life. However, aside from most committed naturalists, she does not entirely blame the city for what happens to people. The city is simply an existing force with which people must deal with. The most dominant theme in Brooks?s work is the ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  18. Analysis Of We Real Cool "We Real Cool," by Gwendolyn Brooks is a lyrical poem that tells a story of teenage rebellion. Although the poem is relatively short, it packs an extremely powerful message about youth. Gwendolyn Brooks centered her works predominately around the African American consciousness. During the time in which the poem was written, many teens, especially young African–American men felt misunderstood and like the world was set up for them to fail. At first glance, it appears this poem is a mere description of misunderstood young adults who are enjoying their youth. However, with further analysis, it is made clear that this poem talks about much more than that. While it is obvious that this poem is about rebellious youths, it is also about self–identity and the dangers of herd mentality. Herd mentality describes how people follow and adapt the behaviors of certain groups. Herd mentality is in no way new; moreover, most people are subject to its effects. However, herd mentality becomes dangerous when a group has enough influence to dictate an individual's way of thinking. When an individual is desperate to find a place to belong, they will most likely follow the crowd even if they know that they are participating in something immoral; this can be seen in "We Real Cool." In the opening lines of the poem, the reader is introduced to the subjects "The Pool Players. Seven at the Golden Shovel"(line 1&2), they are the 'we' in the poem. It becomes apparent to the reader that the speaker is one of the seven pool players mentioned. The speakers' tone in the poem is very prideful and defiant, but at the same time, it is filled with uncertainty. This poem is a formal verse ballad which uses simple sentences that have a steady meter that gives the poem a jazz like quality to the poem which further emphasizes the speaker's nonchalant attitude and their disdain for the establishment. The speaker contempt for the system is shown in the line "We real cool. We Left school." (line3&4) The speaker feels misunderstood by society and yearns to find a place for themselves in the world. The danger in this is that the speaker of a poem gives up on conventional means of education in search for a place where they can belong, which ...Get more content on HelpWriting.Net...

  19. Cool The word cool is very relaxed, never goes out of style, and people will never laugh at someone for using it. Getting at the nature of cool is further complicated by the fact that it has become fashionable in recent years to boast about not being cool. Perhaps the word is being pushed into its next stage of evolution by the freaks and the nerds whose childhood unpopularity is a badge of honor and whose brave new world of geekery is vindication. Coolness is an admired aesthetic of attitude, behavior, comportment, appearance, and style that is influenced by and a product of the Zeitgeist. Because of the varied and changing connotations of cool, as well its subjective nature, the word has no single meaning. The word cool was initially slipped into the english language from its cognates in Dutch and German. It initially was col–which might have been used as far back as the ninth century when somebody deciphered the verse of the Roman logician Boethius from Latin into English–and, for quite a while, could not exactly evaluate how it needed to be spelled. The spelling was toyed with coul, played with coole, and even experienced a koole stage, but R. J. Reynolds Tobacco Company evaluated how to brand menthol smoke with complexity. It at long last settled on cool, at the same time clutching it's feeling of climatic moderation (Vuolo par.2). There is no single idea of cool. One of the crucial aspects of cool is its impermanence. 20. What is Cool? Essay What is Cool? What is "cool?" Does it have to do with temperature or someone's personality? Is it a slang word or a proper English word? And most importantly, how is it decided that something or someone is cool? Cool is a word that can have many different meanings, can be used as slang or proper English, and can be subjective when it comes to using it. I use the word in a couple of ways, but not all are in the Oxford English Dictionary, likewise, the Dictionary recognizes meanings of cool that I did not even know. When I think of the word cool, I immediately think of it much the same as my peers would: a desirable image that excites the mind. Something cool can be a person, place, or thing. Cool is desirable because it is...show more content... Just as warm is to hot, cool is to cold. I might say that it is cool outside if it is not freezing yet, but I can barely see my breath. I can also say that an object is cool, like an apple just taken from the refrigerator. Anything that is not quite cold can be considered of cool temperature. Cool temperatures fall into the region between cold and average. These temperature regions are defined by the person describing the temperature. Cold feels cold; average feels average, and cool falls between the two. This feeling that defines cool makes standards of cool hard to specify. Each person has a good idea what she or he thinks a cool temperature is. Someone from Phoenix, Arizona might think a cool temperature is between 60 and 70 degrees Fahrenheit, while someone from Alaska might think cool is anything between 40 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit. It can also depend on how a body is feeling at the time. If a person is sick and has the chills, temperatures normally considered warm would now be considered cool. Just like my first definition, cool is different for everyone. With my definitions, I can use cool as an adjective or a verb. My first definition – cool is a desirable image that excites the mind – can only be used as an adjective. I can use this cool to describe anything I am interested in, anything that excites me.
