High School Visitation Day • Students will be visiting their assigned High School for the 2011-–2012 school year on Friday, April 1st • Students will be on the High School campus from 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. with teachers from MacArthur • Permission slips are due March 30th • Students will receive an orientation of the school and meet with • a High School Counselor.

HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATION California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) • Students are tested in Language Arts & Math • ELA section covers State standards through grade 10 • Math section covers State standards in grades 6, 7, and Algebra I. 220 Credits • Language Arts–4 Years • Math–3 Years (Algebra I, Geometry, and Algebra II) • Science–2 Years (3 years are recommended) • Social Studies–3 Years • Physical Education–2 Yrs • Visual & Performing Arts–1 Year • Foreign Language–2 Years

  19. Let’s Talk About the 8th Grade Contract Now is the Time to Take Charge!

  20. Two Important Goals at MacArthur are: 1) To teach students to take responsibility for their actions 2) To encourage students to take pride in maintaining appropriate and acceptable behavior • These goals are an integral part of our educational program. • Now that preparations are underway for the promotion of all 8th grade students, we are continuing to stress the importance of these goals through our qualifications for student participation in the 8th grade end-of-the-year activities.

Beginning the first semester of the 8th grade year, all students were repeatedly reminded by staff members and all administrators that, during the second semester, their record of attendance, behavior, and class work would affect their eligibility for participation in the end-of-the-year eighth grade activities.

  22. On February 1st, the second semester began. At that time, all students received new Assignment Cards and Tardy Cards for all classes.The only record of violations that will continue into the second semester will be Dress Code violations. • Having new Assignment Cards and Tardy Cards means a fresh start for your student. We believe that this places all students at the same starting point and gives an equal opportunity for eligibility to each person.

  23. Lost Privileges

  24. Students who receive three or four Friday Schools will lose all privileges. • Students who forge signatures will lose all privileges. • Students receiving one F and below a 2.0 GPA or 2or more F’s in the 2nd semester will lose all privileges. • You can expect written notification to be sent home that will require your signature. By signing, you acknowledge that you have seen the discipline notification. Your student must then return the written notification to the discipline office, before school, the following day. • We will provide written notification to you of each loss of privilege.

  25. The promotion policy of the Santa Ana Unified School District states that students must pass 10 of their 14 eighth grade classes and also pass the Constitution test in order to be promoted to high school. *Any student who does not meet the promotion criteria will NOT be allowed to participate in ANY of the eighth grade activities. • PLEASE NOTE: Language Arts classes are counted as 2 (two) classes, because it meets for two periods. All other classes count as 1 (one) each.

  27. DESCRIPTION OF 8TH GRADE ACTIVITIES

  28. Following Spring Break, starting April 11th, all 8th grade students will qualify for activities and privileges until they have reached the following consequences:

  29. All students must follow the MacArthur Dress Code on the Knott’s Berry Farm trip.Students who are presently in uniform will be allowed to wear other clothing. This year, students will also be permitted to wear sunglasses and hats at Knott’s. Hats may be worn on the trip except Sport Team logos because of gang affiliations. • Any student who misbehaves at Knott’s runs the risk of being eliminated from the slideshow. There may also be a delay in receiving the promotion certificate.

  30. End Of Year Ceremony : • The End of Year Ceremony will be on Monday, June 13th at Godinez Fundamental High School in the gym at 6:30 p.m. • Immediate family members can attend this event. • NO BALLOONS will be allowed in the gym.

  31. BOYS’ CEREMONY ATTIRE: • Dark full length slacksthat are not blue jeans or denim jeans • White shirt with a collar and tie, tuxedo shirts may not be worn • Dark shoes and socks– Platform shoes or shoes with soles more than 1” high may not be worn.

  32. GIRLS’ CEREMONY ATTIRE: • Dress or skirt and blouse– Sundresses are permissible as long as the straps are at least two inches wide at the shoulders. Strapless, bare-back, or spaghetti straps are not permitted. • Due to safety concerns it is strongly suggested that girls wear nylons and flat shoes or age appropriate heels. All heels should be two inches or less. Lightly-applied make-up and light fingernail polish, or French manicures are permissible for the EOY ceremony ONLY.

  33. END-OF-THE-YEAR-DANCE: • This year’s final MacArthur dance, on Friday, June 10thwill be for 8th grade students only. The dance is free and will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. This is not a Prom. Students are expected to wear dress clothes that are appropriate for their age group. If you would like to allow your child to attend the dance, please indicate so on the attached “Eighth Grade Information Sheet” (yellow page).

  34. 8th GRADE SLIDE SHOW: • This activity will take place on Friday, June 17th. • The slide presentation is for 8th grade students only.

  35. Year-End Dance: • My child has permission to attend the 8th grade dance on Friday, June 10th. I understand that my child must be picked up within 15 minutes after the end of the dance. • Any student who misbehaves at the dance or is not picked up within the time allowed, runs the risk of being eliminated from the Knott’s Trip.
