  1. What Is SMILE Eye Surgery

  2. SMILE is an acronym that stands for SMallIncision LenticuleExtraction. SMILE is minimally invasive and is the latest advancement in laser vision correction for myopia (near-sightedness) and astigmatism.

  3. Dr. Chu was the first in Minnesota to perform the SMILE procedure in 2017, and continues to be the only surgeon offering SMILE in the Minneapolis and St. Paul area.

  4. How does the SMILE procedure work?During SMILE, a VisuMaxFemtosecond Laser is used to create a thin microscopic disc of tissue called a lenticule just beneath the surface of the eye.  The lenticule is then extracted through a small opening, eliminating the need for a flap. SMILE is not performed on the surface of the eye, resulting in quick recovery. With SMILE, you may experience less dry eye and discomfort during and after the procedure. Those who have not been LASIK or PRK candidates in the past may now have a laser vision correction option with SMILE.

  5. The only way to restore vision that has been affected by cataracts is through cataract surgery, which is one of the most commonly performed surgeries in the United States.

  6. What Can I Expect After My SMILE Procedure?Vision recovers quickly after SMILE. Many people return to most of their normal activities the next day and because there is no flap, patients are able to resume activities like swimming, out door sports etc. within the first week after SMILE.
