Imprecation1-10 • Job breaks the silence • Cursed the day of his birth • Contrast with 2:10 • Day of birth and night of conception • Jeremiah 20:14-18 • Wished it was non-existent • Darkness and death had removed it from existence • Covered as a thick cloud covers the sun • All that obscures the sun which terrifies the day

  5. Imprecation1-10 • Let the night be barren • No joy or celebration • No other night like it • “Them/those who curse” – magicians/soothsayers • Leviathan occurs several times in O.T. (Job 3:8; 41:1; Psalm 74:13-14; 104:25-26; Isaiah 27:1; Job 7:12 & Ezekiel 32:3-4) • Let there be continued darkness

Imprecation1-10 • If he had never been conceived or died at birth, he would never have had to experience his present troubles • The completeness of the curse: • Total obliteration of the day of his birth and a curse on all forces and elements that would acknowledge it • The completeness of total darkness, restraining all elements that produce any form of light that would shine on his birth or conception

  7. Lamentation11-19 • Why? • Why didn’t I die immediately? • Why should others have been allowed to contribute to my survival? • Death brings peace • Kings & counselors • Princes • The stillborn • The wicked • Prisoners • The small & great

  8. Confusion20-26 • What is the meaning of my life? • What purpose is life when it is full of suffering? • Suicide never seems to be a consideration • Death is longed for, even as one who digs for buried treasure • God has “hedged him in” • He’s trapped • He groans even before his food arrives • His misery and groaning is poured out as abundantly as water

  9. Confusion20-26 • “What’s next?” • Trouble has come, evil following evil • Apparently God has forsaken him • He finds no respite that would come with death • Trouble will continue to come
