  1. Do the rubbish bins in Paekakariki need recycling bins beside them?

  2. How many bins are there in Paekak? In Paekak there are 26 rubbish bins. 4 are in Campbell Park 11 are on The Parade 7 are on Beach Road 1 is on Ames Street 2 are on Tilley Road(one of these is in the football grounds).

  3. Method My method was to do a waste audit with Graham Carson. A waste audit is when you do a survey on waste to find out what people put in the public bins. I met Graham at 7am to empty and check the rubbish bins.

  4. Variables Variables that changed: 1. Time of year. 2. Fine weather. 3. Rubbish bins location. Variables that didn’t change: 1.Theres always rubbish.

  5. Predictions I predict that there will be at least 10 to 12 cans in the bins outside of Horaces. I predict that there will be 5 bags of dog poo.

  6. Average rubbish collection Graham say he collects 3 to 4 full large black rubbish bags per day. But on a busy day like Queens Birthday weekend he can collect 9 to 12 bags per day. Because there is no public recycling bins Graham only recycles glass.

  7. Results I found that in these bins Notice Board:1 plastic,2 glass and 3 cans. Horace’s:7 plastic,3 glass,3 cans and a lot of junk mail. Deli:2 cans. Finns:2 bags of household rubbish,1 plastic,4 glass and 2 cans.

  8. Results continued 2nd Finns:2 household rubbish, 2 plastic and 2 glass. Old F&C shop:1 plastic. Parade:General rubbish and dog poo.( 1 bin was empty). Campbell Park:1 pair of red shoes.

  9. Interesting Finds The junk mail outside of Horaces all appears to come from the private post boxes next door. Visitors seem to be using our bins to dispose of their general rubbish. I’ve got no idea of where those shoes come from.

  10. Gross finds!!!!!!!!!! Quite a few babies nappies= YUCK & SMELL!! Household rubbish=PU!! Oil container Unbagged dog poo=bad smell!

  11. Conclusion On average, including junk mail there are 55 items in our public bins per day that can be recycled. Over a year this would work out to be over 20,000 that at the moment just goes to the dump and never gets recycled.

  12. Conclusion continued In this experiment I found that Paekakariki desperately needs a recycling bins beside the rubbish bins.My first prediction was correct and the second prediction was correct. This was quite an interesting experiment to do.
