  2. Meningitis Symptoms An episode of acute meningitis (inflammation of the membranes that line the brain and spinal cord) is a common infection that affects the membranes that cover the brain and spinal cord. The condition may progress to a more serious or chronic condition. As many as 10% of episodes are caused by the herpes simplex virus.

  3. Signs of meningitis can usually be diagnosed fairly early in the disease process. Most cases will start with fairly benign symptoms of headache, fever, and/or stiff neck, sometimes with a brief loss of consciousness. The earliest symptoms tend to be the worst, and it is important to remember to treat such symptoms very seriously, as they may be the first warning of a serious illness. Meningitis refers to a range of conditions that can produce these symptoms. They include:

  4. 1. Fever Meningitis is a bacterial infection that is often present in children and adults. It can be caused by a virus, a bacteria, or rarely a parasite. However, the infection cannot be identified until it is cultured in a laboratory. When you have a high fever over 38°C, with a stiff neck, confusion, and poor physical condition, you may have meningitis.

  5. 2. Headache Headache is one of the most common symptoms of meningitis. It is a warning signal that a serious bacterial infection is present. The headache can be throbbing or pulsating, and it is located on one side of the head. It is important to note that some meningitis may have a frontal headache, which can be very painful.

  6. 3. Neck pain It is common to have stiffness in the neck. It is not an isolated symptom, but part of the stiffness. However, a stiff neck does not always mean meningitis. Sometimes, the stiffness is present for several days before the doctor sees it. This is a sign that the patient did not get better after the initial symptoms.

  7. 4. Confusion A headache, nausea, and fever are often present in meningitis. A headache can be a symptom of any other infection (brain abscess, bacterial meningitis, sinusitis), so it is necessary to look for other clues to identify the cause of the headache. Meningitis is usually a cause of fever, nausea, headache, and headache. Therefore, when fever and headache are present, this should be a signal to go to see a doctor. Confusion can be present in meningitis, but it is also present in patients with brain abscess, encephalitis, encephalitis, meningitis, etc. Therefore, it is important to know the cause of the confusion.

  8. 5. Weakness One of the most frequent neurological symptoms is a reduction in muscular strength. This weakness is usually present in the neck and the arms. However, it can also affect the lower limbs. It is important to remember that it is not always necessary to have a weakness to have meningitis. Many people with meningitis can be completely well, but if the symptom is present it could be very serious.

  9. 6. Seizures The other common feature of a meningitis case is that of seizures. In mild cases, you may only see the child stop suddenly in play. If seizures are present, it is important to seek the doctor’s attention as soon as possible as the chance of neurological complications is high. Seizures are an important sign of meningitis as they can indicate that the brain is being damaged by the virus. Brain damage is most common in infants under the age of 6 months, as they are not fully developed.
