  2. 29 CFR 29.5 (b)(4)(ii) • Requires instructors of Related Instruction to have training in teaching techniques and adult learning styles, which may occur before or after the apprenticeship instructor has started to provide the related technical instruction

  3. NYSED Survey Regarding Related Instruction • Sent to over 750 sponsors • 42% response rate • Related instruction providers include unions, trade organizations, BOCES, school districts, community colleges, sponsor provided, and other entities • RI instructors who have received training from national trade organizations, joint apprenticeship training organizations or were NYS certified teachers

  4. Certification of Instructors • Instructors who possess a valid NYS teacher certificate in any P-12 area will not be required to seek additional training • Instructors who have attended State or national training, at least one week in length that includes training in teaching techniques and adult learning styles will not be required to seek additional training

  5. Certification of Instructors (continued) • Receive instruction through an online course developed in coordination with NYSED’s Regional Adult Education Network (RAEN)

  6. Development of online course to meet requirements of the regulation • NYSED is coordinating the development of a three hour training to meet the certification requirements • Course will be online • Fee charged to cover costs

  7. Course Contents • Knowing Yourself As a Learner – an opportunity to complete a Self-Evaluation and think about your own learning styles and those you may encounter among your students • Adult Learning Theory – how adults learn • The Art of Teaching Adults – using the concept of learning styles and Adult Learning Theory to create a successful classroom environment and curricula structure for your students

  8. Follow up to Training in Teaching Techniques and Adult Learning Styles • DLEAs and ATRs will request evidence that providers of related instruction have met one of the criteria for having received adult learning styles training during normal business contact • Evidence can include official certificates of completion prepared by providers of the training or evidence of P-12 teacher certification

  9. Expected Rollout • It is anticipated that the online training option can be in place by the start of the new year • Related Instruction Providers will be notified through sponsors, DLEAs and ATRs of the means through which instructors of related instruction can be certified as having met the requirement
