  3. 1. Planning your content • prepare ahead of time • read textbook • correlate with lecture • identify key points • consider diversity of learners andways of learning • prepare notes

  4. 2. Arranging your material • * tell them what you are going to say * say it* tell them what you said • decide on how to break up class time • lecture/small group work/ discussions • chunk activities • avoid solid lecturing

  5. 3. Creating Effective Style:How should you present information?s • how do you start a class? • how do you end a class? • how do you lead a discussion? • how do you deal with studentquestions?

  6. 4 + 5: Preparing your Delivery and Presenting your material • directing students' attention • using your voice • using the physical classroom space • chalk board • physical space (not anchored to one spot) • using notes and visuals including computer, overhead, or handouts • managing your time • dealing with events thatbreak your structure? * technology and students

  7. To be effective For the course • create a syllabus with clear policies • Develop grading policies • Ensure academic integrity • Ensure consistency

To be effective (cont) For yourself • Allow time for the 5 phases above • After each class • take time to reflect and write out notes for yourself about what worked and what did not • note what you said you would do (eg in answering student questions) and note what you still have to do next time
