Objectives of the Workshop • Within a one day workshop we would like to share the insights gained by the MOWE-IT project on • good solutions as well as on the • needs for further research and technical development • to keep the European road sector competitive even under adverse environmental conditions. • I • In our focus are technical and managerial solutions within the road sector and its inter-linkage to rail, air and shipping in urban and long-distance travel.

ExpetedResults • We would like to take home the following results: • Answers to our questions • Indications which questions are wrong or irrelevant • Hints towards additional issues in the area • The results of this workshop will go into two reports to the European Commission. • The Policy Guidebook identifies good practices to increase the resilience of road transport services in our key areas: infrastructure availability, passenger services and logistics. • The RTD roadmap builds on the identified knowledge gaps and proposes a research strategy to close them, which might be taken up by the EC’s Horizon2020 programme.

Structure of the road passenger market and main vulnerabilities • Composition of road passenger transport: • Individual car travel including taxi services • Non-motorised travel: walking and cycling in urban areas • Urban and inter-urban bus and coach services by private and public entities • Reaction patterns of road transport participants: • Pre-trip decisions: How do people and companies receive weather and traffic warnings and how do these influence travel decisions? • Delays and congestion: how do people and operators react when natural hazards delay or interrupt trips? • Traffic safety: what are most striking safety implications and how can technology and regulation help mitigating them?
