Nationalists Overthrow Qing Dynasty • Kuomintang (Nationalist Party) • Wanted modernization and nationalization • Sun-Yat-Sen or Sun Yixian- 1912 led a revolution to over throw Qing Dynasty • Sun became the 1st president of the new Republic of China • “ 3 Principles of the People” • Nationalism (end of Foreign control) • Peoples rights (Democracy) • People’s Livelihood ( economic security for all)

Chiang Kai Shek • Took Sun’s place as leader of the Nationalists party after his death • Feared the communist opponents in China led by Mao Zedong • Attacked and killed any communist supporters • Corrupt government • Did not improve lives for rural peasants of China, as a result many peasants supported the Chinese Communist Party
