  1. Dec. 11, 2012 Coordination Group Meeting Geologic Data Subcommittee -- Update to Coordination Group David R. Soller, Chair Geologist, U.S. Geological Survey (703) 648-6907 drsoller@usgs.gov

  2. Introduction The purpose of the Geologic Data Subcommittee is to coordinate geologic data-related activities (development, use, sharing, and dissemination), mostly among Federal agencies. Members: • Dave Soller, USGS, Chair • Jerry Bernard, USDA • Mark Crowell, FEMA • Melody Holm, USFS • Lucy Kuizon, BLM • John LaBrecque, NASA • Don McKay, ISGS • Vince Santucci, NPS • George Sharman, NOAA • ??, BOEM • ??, USACE • …

  3. NGDA Data Themes and Data Sets • The following data themes and data sets fall under the purview of the Geologic Data Subcommittee: • Geologic mapping (USGS, Dave Soller) • Sand and gravel, offshore (BOEM, Doug Vandegraft) • Wells, offshore (BOEM, Doug Vandegraft) • … other themes will be systematically identified, in FY13…

  4. NGDA Data Themes and Data Sets • We will hold discussions with managers of the USGS geoscience Programs, in order to identify other potential NGDA data themes and data sets • Need to understand the precise definitions of “data theme”, “data set”, …

  5. Status of the FGDC Geologic Map Symbolization Standard • User support for the Standard is provided by USGS. Includes addressing technical questions, requests for paper copies, and suggestions for additions/corrections to the Standard • An update to the Standard is anticipated, in collaboration with State geological surveys, Geological Survey of Canada, and perhaps ESRI.

  6. Convergence on a geologic map database design • Objective ranges from a set of general specs. for field and table names, to a single, tightly-defined database implementation • Member agencies in Subcommittee are evaluating current designs (e.g., USGS, NPS), in order to refine that objective • Test implementation under FGDC CAP grant • Community workspace under development (e.g., Facebook group)

  7. Next Steps • Determine whether the Symbolization Standard should be revised • Converge on geologic map database design • Find additional members (e.g., BOEM, USACE) • Establish initial NGDA Geology Data Themes / Datasets and identify additional Themes

  8. The Redesigned USGS/AASGNational Geologic Map Database
