  2. Welcome to the Research Master’s Programme in“Migration, Ethnic Relations and Multiculturalism”(MERM)CoordinatorMaykel Verkuyten

WHY DO MERM ? ‘Integration is a central issue because the number of young people in this country with an immigrant background is increasing, not decreasing’ (Angela Merkel) ‘Today I want to talk to you about what may be the most important subject of all - how we can strengthen the bonds of our national community as we grow more racially and ethnically diverse’ (Bill Clinton) ‘Nowadays, everyone has an opinion about immigration, integration, and cultural diversity but what we need is systematic empirical research’ (ERC)

Some core facts Oldest UU Research Master English language Two year program Start September Degree: Msc Until now: more than 90 graduates National assessment, 2010: MERM was evaluated as one of the three best research master’s programs in the social sciences in the Netherlands ‘Master Keuzegids’ (2013): MERM was a top-10 best masters in the Netherlands

Organisation Part of the Graduate School of Social and Behavioural Sciences Interdisciplinary social science (ASW) European Research Centre on Migration and Ethnic Relations(ERCOMER: www.ercomer.eu) Research program of ERCOMER was assessed by an international assessment committee which concluded:“The quality of this program is excellent in nearly all aspects. Within the European community (and beyond), the program is recognized as a leader in the study of migration, cultural diversity and ethnic relations.”

Theses Until now: approx. 40% of all theses have been submitted or accepted for publication Theses have been published in e.g., ‘Journal of Ethnic and Migration Studies’; ‘National Identities’; ‘Political Psychology’; ‘European Sociological Review’; ‘Social Psychology Quarterly’; ‘Identities’; ‘British Journal of Social Psychology’; ‘European Union Politics’; ‘International Migration Review’; Comparative Political Studies’

Theses topics: Examples • Islamophobia in the Netherlands • Nationalism in the Basque country • Immigration and labour market position in Greece • Right-wing voting in Belgium: the case of the ‘Vlaams Blok’ • Hybridity and identity: The Polish Tatars • Academic achievement and the self-concept: ethnic minorities in the Netherlands • Multiculturalism and minority rights: explaining country differences • Acculturation and psychological well-being among adolescents in the Netherlands • Ethnic and republic identification in the Russian Federation and Ukraine • Hyphenated identities and acculturation: Second generation Chinese of Canada and the Netherlands • Integration of refugees in the Netherlands • The ‘integration paradox’ among highly educated immigrants

  14. What do we expect from you? Strong interest in research Strong interest in issues related to migration, integration, cultural diversity and ethnic conflict Motivation and commitment (attendance, active participation) Independence and autonomy (responsibility)

  15. Admission requirements Bachelor in one of the social or behavioural sciences (e.g. ASW, Anthropology, Sociology, Political Science, Pedagogical Science, Social Psychology, Psychology. Also: Utrecht University College, Roosevelt Academy, and the like) adequate command of English adequate intellectual skills: GPA > 7.5 (> 3.3) Adequate knowledge of methods and statistics

Application and enrolment Procedure: you submit an enrolment request (application via ‘studielink’) your application is reviewed by the Board of Studies of the Graduate School you receive a letter of acceptance you finalize your enrolment All practical information can be found at: www.uu.nl/programmes/merm Application deadlines: December 2013 (‘early bird’) and spring, 2014
