We can visualize numbers in different ways • We can identify numbers in standard form, in written form or when represented by objects • It is important to be able to identify numbers in all of these ways to understand or read them to interpret their meaning in different situations Reading Numbers

  5. Once we understand how to read numbers and determine their value, we can use this information to help us in writing and calculating numbers using different operations (estimating, comparing, ordering, adding, subtracting, multiplying and dividing) Writing Numbers

Please read the following numbers out loud:5693, 77 465, 946, 843 017, 248 • If 348 represented the number of trick-or-treaters Miss Mustard saw at her house on Halloween night, estimate the amount of candy she had to buy to be able to give each trick-or-treater 3 pieces • To get the answer to this question, we add 348+348+348=1044 Reading and Writing Numbers

  7. The numbers in the previous problem in standard form are:348 and 1044 • The numbers in the previous problem in expanded form are:300+40+81000+40+4 • ***Notice that when we expand the number 1044, we don’t include the hundreds number as it is a 0*** Standard and expanded forms of these numbers

  8. Read Aaron’s problem on pages 28-29 in your text book and complete “Reflecting” questions #1, 2 and 3 on page 29 and “Practising” questions #5 and 6 on page 30 • Complete the “Reading and Writing Numbers” homework page, all questions On Your Own
