  16. Example Podcasts • DeKalb County Public Library–Podcasts (http://dekalblibrary.org/podcasts)Every year the Georgia Center for the Book and the DeKalb County Public Library in Georgia bring many top authors to the library to speak about and read from their work. This podcast brings you recordings from many of these author talks • ESLpodTV (http://kibishipaul.com/blog1)My name is Paul and I am a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language living in Japan. I have been here about 20 years working in a variety of educational establishments. Currently I am working as a language instructor in high schools and private 'juku'. The lessons are aimed at students with an intermediate to advanced level of English and are also supplemented by online interactive exercises that can be accessed from the main website. • Room 312 - A View into the Vortex (http://room312.podbean.com)Educational lessons from Room 312. Explores various aspects of English literature and writing from a geekish point of view. Mr. Zog has been teaching English for 12 years and has taught such courses as English 9 & 10, Strategic Reading, American Literature, English Composition, and Creative Writing. He loves gaming, music (he plays guitar - in fact, he wrote some of the music in the podcast), and loves technology. Teachers teaching Teachers Class Acts

  17. Surveys and Polls These resources allow you to design online surveys, collect responses, analyze them and finally present the survey results. Many of these allow responses via text messages.

  18. Popcorn Review 5. As these students provide commentary, the students listening should monitor for accuracy and interject relevant ideas, quotes, observations, etc. 6. Every few minutes, have new students come up to the front and take the “hot seat”. At this point change the question or modify the original question based on the previous discussion. All students need to be ready to participate in the discussion. 7. At the end, have the students reflect on the discussion as a group and come up with an overarching statement about how the themes of the Puritan tradition relate to the human condition. 1. Arrange desks so that there are three or four in a row at the front of the room. 2. At first, assign three or four students to take the seats in the front of the classroom. As the strategy continues, encourage students to volunteer to sit in the front. 3. Make a general statement that relates to the themes of Puritan literature as it pertains to the human condition. 4. The students in the front are in the “hot seat” and must make comments about the statement based on what they have read and evidence from the text.

  19. Big Ideas

  20. Example #1 Use a HAPG Select two writing traits you want to work with Identify strategies related to those traits Look at the technology tools we discussed How would you modify that strategy using the tools?

  21. Wrap It Up Suggested technology tools to use for each stage of instruction: • Anticipatory Set – video or audio, survey with clickers or text message • Input– document camera, smart board • Model – labs, interactive activities, animation • Check for Understanding – survey, revisit survey, discussion forum • Guided Practice – online activities, blog entries, graphic organizer • Close/Enrichment– interactive lessons, video or audio • ASSESS (Summative) – PowerPoint, video, animation, product . Assign student roles: (content layout), (video design), (audio design***have them give you lyrics)

  27. Document Camera(Rationale) Good writing teachers model writing for the students on a regular basis. A document camera makes that modeling very genuine because no longer is the teacher writing on a transparency or a giant piece of paper. She/he is writing on a paper just like the students will be writing on! The teacher is then able to model correct paper organization, handwriting, etc.

  28. Document Camera(Application) • Assign a writing assignment for homework • The following day, randomly select 3 students' papers. (***Be sure to cover the student’s names. ***) • These 3 papers are placed under the document camera one at a time for grading. • Model a "think-aloud" process while grading the first paper. • Place the second paper under the document camera and have students discuss in pairs suggested revisions. • Call on a few pairs to gather their input • Revisit the “think-aloud” process to identify revisions that may have been overlooked • Repeat this process with the final paper • When revisions have been made, the assignments can be given a letter grade on the spot.

  29. Interactive Whiteboard Activities for7th Grade Writing • Hot Off the Press • How to Use A Thesaurus

  30. Text to Speech NaturalReader is a Text to Speech software with natural sounding voices. This easy to use software can convert any written text such as MS Word, Webpage, PDF files, and Emails into spoken words. NaturalReader can also convert any written text into audio files such as MP3 or WAV for your CD player or iPod. This is a great resource to help writers improve by allowing them to listen to their work. It can also be used to teach second language students by expanding their experience and understanding by listening to any text at any speed.

  31. Script Writing Allow your students to produce a daily news broadcast that airs to their entire school. The process of creating a daily newscast entails many responsibilities that cover a broad range of topic areas. In addition to strengthening curricular skills, this program also utilizes teamwork and individual responsibility to get the job done. Click on the title to see an example…

  32. Video Timeline A video timeline, is an excellent culminating presentation that not only acts as a review for the historical, literacy, and scientific information the students have learned thus far, but it also stimulates students to research and expand their knowledge in other areas as well. Students are challenged to present the cumulative information in an interesting and meaningful way. Click on the title to see an example…

  33. Productivity Tools Create a flip book based upon your story (MS Word) Create a slide show to animate your story (MS PowerPoint) Create a riddle mystery puzzle box (MS PowerPoint ) Create a flyer or brochure (MS Publisher or Adobe InDesign) Create a Jeopardy game (MS PowerPoint, MS Publisher, or Adobe InDesign) Create a class slide show yearbook with student likenesses (Adobe PhotoShop, PhotoStory, PowerPoint) Turn yourself into an image (Adobe PhotoShop, PhotoStory, PowerPoint )

  34. Microsoft Word Ideas

  35. Peer-review w/Comments in Word • Have students write a story in Microsoft Word • Have students do one of the following: • Send it to you so you can add it to the wiki • Post it to the wiki • Save it to the school server • Other students will then open the assigned document and use the Comments Feature in Word to provide feedback • Allow them to work in groups or pairs as an opportunity to discuss their comments

  36. Rule-Based Summarizing Post a sample passage to the wiki or on the blog and instruct students to save the document in Word. In Microsoft Word, the students should do the following: • Take out the material that is not important to understanding • Take out words that repeat information • Replace a list of things with a word that describes the things in the list (e.g., use the word trees for elm, oak, and maple); and • Find a topic sentence. If they can’t find a topic sentence, tell them to write one.
