What is a preceptor? • A preceptor teaches and conveys information http://www.dietitians.ca/Career/Mentoring---Preceptoring/Preceptoring.aspx • A preceptor • is an experienced practitioner who provides role support and learning experiences to student and staff learners • works with the learner for a defined period of time to assist the learner in acquiring new competencies for safe, ethical and quality practice http://www.preceptordevelopment.org/docs/PR_Factsheet_Jan2109_forWeb.pdf

    3. Preceptoring is not mentoring • Mentoring is a peer relationship • it typically begins where training ends • a more experienced person helps someone with less experience to grow and develop http://www.dietitians.ca/Career/Mentoring---Preceptoring/Mentoring.aspx

Why be a preceptor? • Dietetic education programs rely on preceptors to provide real-life, practice based experiences to dietetic students • Preceptors help students to… • apply their academic knowledge to practice situations • gain confidence • increase the knowledge and skills they’ll need in order to succeed as a dietitian http://www.dietitians.ca/Career/Mentoring---Preceptoring/Preceptoring.aspx

Why be a preceptor? • Being a preceptor… • creates a learning environment for both the preceptor and the student • provides the opportunity to share information, which strengthens the knowledge of both the preceptor and the student • allows for the opportunity to network and to build relationships between practitioners http://www.dietitians.ca/Career/Mentoring---Preceptoring/Preceptoring.aspx

Where do they come from? • Primary requests: • University of Guelph • Master of Applied Nutrition program • 13 week placement • Class on Mondays, 3 – 4 days with preceptor(s) • Mid-placement evaluation with U o G coordinator • Hamilton Health Sciences • Internship program • 3 full weeks • London Health Sciences Centre • Internship program • 2 full weeks

    7. Where do they come from? • Other requests: • Northern Ontario School of Medicine • Internship program • 4 full weeks • Ryerson University • Internationally Educated Dietitians Pre-Registration Program (IDPP) • Independent Competency • ARAMARK Canada

    8. Taking interns • How many requests do we get? • 2010 – 4 • 2011 – 4 • 2012 – 6 • 2013 – 4 • 2014 – 1+…? • There are ~ 20 RDs • Guideline • each RD to be a preceptor once every other year • interns can be shared (maximum of 2 RDs for each intern) • In addition, it is possible to be asked to fill in for 1 or 2 days to cover preceptor away dates

Points to consider • Learning objectives • these come from the intern (and their program) • it is the intern’s responsibility to tell you what kinds of experiences s/he is looking for • talk about this at the beginning of their rotation • Time management • interns take more time! • allot an extra 60minutes each day on regular clinic days • allot extra time for the mid- and final evaluations • Giving feedback • provide constructive feedback • be open to receiving feedback

Points to consider • Evaluation • this comes from the intern’s program • the intern is responsible for completing and commenting on the competencies in the evaluation • it is the intern’s job to tell us whether or not s/he has met the competencies, and it is for us to agree or disagree with the assessment • suggest that s/he keep a journal to help her/him • there should be no surprises
