Political Impact • In the Beginning of the 30s gov. does nothing • See the problem as a regional issue • 1935- congress finally takes action; dust from Black Sunday makes its way to Washington D.C. • WPA; New Deal Program • Paid farmers to use new conservation methods • Paid farmers not to farm • Planted trees for windbreaks • Planted crops in rotations

Economic Impact • In the early 30s, farmers made money (boom) • Still farming what was previously need for war • Speculators come from the North; Briefcase farmers • Drought conditions worsen (bust) • No harvest • Farmers lose farms and land • Banks close • Businesses close • Investors lose money

  5. Geographic Impact • About 100,000, 000 acres of topsoil is displaced • Severe drought in the region • Extensive crop failures • Extensive damage to the environment • Plowing up of the virgin prairies
