  1. Getting Ahead Before You Fall B e h i n d ES1000 How To Succeed In College

  2. Getting Ahead Before….. • College/University is more than Good Grades • You will get behind while you are in school. • You will have: 4 Tests the same week, 5 Homework's the same day, Girlfriend/Boyfriend/Spouse, Roommate, i.e.Life • Being Successful Means Knowing How to Catch Up after Falling Behind.

  3. Getting Ahead Before….. • We asked you to attend Professional Society Meetings, Cultural Events, and other activities to help you be successful in engineering…. • But the University is about living in the dorm, getting involved, roommates, significant others, concerts, basketball, sleeping, credit cards, dorm food, late nights, laundry, TV's, popcorn, illegal beverages, parties,Monday mornings, schedules, working, cars, Greeks, athletics, …and did I forget anything…….?

  4. Getting Ahead Before... • The Enthusiasm Curve - • In almost every major activity you do, you’ll experience the Enthusiasm Curve (Not everyone, but most will to some extent). It’s true for school, teachers, TA’s, deans, first job …. • You start with a little apprehension, which quickly goes to the excitement of Starting Something New.

  5. Getting Ahead Before... • The Enthusiasm Curve - • Then, the First Exams hit at the end of the first month. The new Washakie begins to look the same as yesterday, your pig of a roommate is getting really old, and “I’m not sure I want to be an engineer.” • Classes become harder, intensity decreases. • Your enthusiasm reaches the low pointabout mid-Month2.

  6. Getting Ahead Before... • The Enthusiasm Curve - • Going home for Thanksgiving is often at rock bottom. School’s tough, its snowy and cold, and Mom’s T-day dinner tastes mighty good. (We have lost students at this point.) • But… Coming back from Thanksgiving, the dorm and food don’t seemso bad, and enthusiasm begins to climb. • You end up overaverage!

  7. Getting Ahead Before…. • There is a great little book about Living At a University entitled,“Been There….Should’ve Done That…505 tips for making the most of college.”,by Suzette Tyler, Front Porch Press, Haslett, Michigan, 1997 • The Premise of the Book is, “The problem with college is that you figure it about the time you are ready to graduate.”

  8. Getting Ahead Before…. • One of the most important Ideas is“College is a good time to become the person you want to be. People accept you for who you are now, not who you were in the Third Grade.” • That gives you remarkable freedom, which may be comforting, or not. “I went to preschool with the same kids I graduated from high school with. I never had a moment of trying to figure out where I fit in-- until college.”

  9. Getting Ahead Before... Dorms • The hardest part of college life is living in the dorm.. • “My roommate had this “need” to make our room “Party Central” all hours of the day and night. I was too gutless to suggest anything as nerdy as “quiet hours.” It lasted until grades came…At least this nerd’s still in School.” • The kid was glued to the Internet… that monitor light was never off. About three in the morning, I’d want to kill him.” • Remember, you paid for the dorm, too.

  10. Getting Ahead Before... Dorms • “Everyone gets the late night ‘munchies’, especially if you eat dinner at five o’clock. Stock up on your own supply of goodies - fat free, of course. It’s healthier and cheaper than hitting vending machines or ordering take-out…as long as you don’t polish everything off in the first hour.” • “The ‘Freshman 15’ isn’t from dorm food. It’s alcohol and ordering pizza when you’re trashed at 3:00 AM.”

  11. Getting Ahead Before... Advising • “Even if you’re an Einstein, the first semester is a big adjustment. Don’t get so hung up on getting out in four years that you bite off more than you can chew. You can always pick up extra credits somewhere along the line.” • “I was valedictorian in High School, so it was pretty discouraging when I had to work a whole lot harder-- for C’s! I should have started with an easier load and built up some confidence. • “It’s better to take fewer credits and do well than just get by with more. GPA’s are just too hard to bring up!

  12. Advising Getting Ahead Before... • “The number of courses you take is more important than the number of credits. Four courses worth 16 credits are more manageable than five courses worth 15 credits.” • “If I’d talked to an advisor instead of just my friends, I could have saved about $5,000 and a lot of grief.” • “Don’t believe everything you read. I spent the summer taking a course I absolutely hated only to find out that the requirement had been dropped. You need to talk to your advisors on a regular basis.” • “You can mess up your entire program and graduation date if you miss a course that isn’t offered every semester… Have an advisor review your four year plan periodically.”

  13. Getting Ahead Before…. Courses • Rule #1 - Don’t Get Behind • Start at the Beginning. • Attend Class. Yourself. And take Notes!!! • Do your homework. Read. Summarize Notes. • By yourself or with a study group. • Get a Daytimer or a PDA. • It’s a decision. You make it, not your roommate or anyone else.

  14. Getting Ahead Before…. Courses • Rule #2 - Catch up! • If you do get behind, catch up, today, not tomorrow. • Talk to the Professor • Do it,... Yourself! • And if you can’t turn it in, do it anyway.

  15. Getting Ahead Before…. Courses • Rule #3 - Get Help When You Need It Now,Not When It’s Too Late • We have difficulty asking for help. • Lots of resources for help • The Professor • The Teaching Assistant/Peer Assistant • Societies • Dorm/Frat/Sorority/Organizations • Student Services • Your Advisor

  16. Getting Ahead Before…. Courses • Rule #4 - Brush Yourself Off and Try it Again • Accept the Fact and Deal with It. • Whether you drop or don’t drop depends on where you (and your GPA) are. • If your GPA will stay above a 2.0, stay in and work • Registration drops the first F and replaces the grade. • If not, take the Withdrawal • Ask the Prof if you can continue to come. • Take the class over Immediately, maybe from a different Prof if you can.

  17. Getting Ahead Before…. Getting Help • There are so many ways of getting help that the danger may be you try to use too many. • Student Services Better Grades Program www.uwyo.edu/bettergrades • Tutoring Programs (Tau Beta Pi), Workshops

  18. Getting Ahead Before…. Getting Help • Rule #1 - Don’t Get Behind • Rule #2 - Catch up! • Rule #3 - Get Help When You Need It Now, Not When It’s Too Late • Rule #4 - Brush Yourself Off and Try it Again

  19. The Plan Getting Ahead Before…. • The “Plan” • Attend Class 15 hours • Do Homework 30 hours (2-3 hours/hour class) • Total 45 hours

  20. Getting Ahead Before…. • Don’t Laugh…. • Listen in Your “1000” Class • People are NOT getting paid extra for teaching 1000. They do it so they can help you. Yes…Really!

  21. Getting Ahead and You Won’t Fall Behind!!! • Have a Great Semester • Don’t fall off the Enthusiasm Curve
