  2. Main Idea • Beyond the ongoing turmoil of the Vietnam War, the Nixon administration did enjoy some notable success.

  3. Conservative Revolution • On the heels of Vietnam, Civil Rights, and the counterculture, the average American was ready for stability. • Nixon’s election marked a change in political attitude in the US- from liberal to conservative.

  4. Get on the Bus • To end school segregation, some communities bused white students across town to traditionally AA schools (and vice-versa) • Some parents were outraged. • Swann v. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (1971): Supreme Court allows busing of students to continue to aid in desegregation. • Nixon also widens Affirmative Action mandates to include women.

  5. Nixon You Don’t Know • Began Food Stamp program to help impoverished families. • Clean Air and Clean Water Act passed to aid environmental movement. • Environmental Protection Agency created to enforce new laws.

  6. Nixon the Cold Warrior • Détente: easing of Cold War tension between USSR, China and the US. • SALT I (Strategic Arms imitation Talks) agreement between USSR and US that limited the amount of nuclear weapons each nation possessed.

  7. Middle East • Yom Kippur War: Israel v. Egypt and Syria • USSR sent weapons and $ to Egy. And Syr. • US aids Isr. • Arab nations try to get US from aiding Israel by imposing an oil embargo. • Embargo drives up cost of gas, and increases consumer costs.
