  1. PHYLUM MOLLUSCA “The Mollusks”

  2. Characteristics of the Phylum Mollusca 30,000+ extant mollusca = soft-bodied animals Characteristics of mollusks: 1. usually symmetrical, unsegmented, definite head/foot region 2. muscular foot (f) = locomotion 3. body wall is called a mantle 4. produces shell in some mollusks 5. surface of animal is ciliated & secretes mucous

  3. Characteristics of the Phylum Mollusca continued… 6. radula = file-tongue 7. open-circulatory system w/3-chambered heart 8. gases exchange across the body's surface 9. 1 or 2 "kidney-like" structures called metanephridia 10. very developed nervous system

  4. Classes of the Phylum Mollusca continued… Class Monoplacophora “mono” means one; “placo” means plate; “phora” means bearing -discovered in deep waters of the Pacific off of Mexico Class Polyplacophora “poly” means many; “placo” means plate; “phora” means bearing -examples: chitons Class Scaphopoda -tusk shells (a.k.a. tooth shells) Class Gastropoda…………..a.k.a. univalves - “gastro” means stomach; “poda” means foot - examples: conchs, whelks, cowries, augers, etc. Class Bivalvia………….a.k.a. bivalves -”bi” means two; “valve” refers to the shell -examples: clams, scallops, oysters Class Cephalopoda……………a.k.a. “valveless” -”cephalo” means head; “poda” means foot - examples: squid, octupus, cuttlefiesh, chambered nautilus
