VGS Key Functions • Coordinate assignments across WECC • Assembly of information • Analysis of issues • Integrate pertinent information and analysis • WECC staff, Committees • Membership • Create informational documents • Communicate the state of renewable integration • Identify and prioritize the reliability and market impacts of identified issues • Provide recommendations to JGC • Activities, Standards, Practices

  4. VGS Organization • Workgroups (WG) • Operating, Planning, Market, Technology • WG participation is open • Issues organized into WG(s) • WG will prioritize issues & gather information • VGS will bring issues back together and create workplan

  5. Accomplishments • VG Issue Survey in December • Kickoff call January 15 • Discussed issues brought to the table • VGS organization & expectations • NERC IVGTF comment submittal • Comments well received by NERC • DOE funding submittal • First in-person Meeting April 22 • Reviewed workplan

  6. Current Activities • Workgroups are finalizing the drafting of a 24 month workplan • VGS is organizing past data/studies • VGS assuring that there is awareness and representation on pertinent NERC and NAESB activities • DOE funding • Announcement due April 30

Operating Workgroup Update • Chairs - Bart McManus (BPA)and Grant Rosenblum (CAISO) • Draft Workplan Activities • Quantifying Reserve Requirements • Evaluation of VG to provide Ancillary Services • Evaluation of BA cooperation • Common methodologies • Capacity factor calculations • Information granularity requirements

Planning Workgroup Update • Chair – (open) • Draft Workplan Activities • Perform transmission adequacy analyses for accommodating the integration of variable generation • Review historical data to correlate variable generation levels with peak and light load and transmission line loadings to validate planning assumptions

Marketing Workgroup Update • Chair – Paul Arnold (ColumbiaGrid) • Draft Workplan Activities • Market mechanisms for Ancillary Services • How VG resources on networked transmission should be assigned capacity? • Portion of VG resources counted (tagged) as firm? • Affect of liquid REC market on VG development, marketing, reliability?
