Software Trade Data Constraints • Official statistics on U.S. software exports and imports do not accurately reflect the true value of software trade for the following reasons: - Software can be distributed overseas on a master disk or transmitted electronically and then replicated in a foreign country in high volumes; -It can be distributed internationally through the Internet; -Software is not always reported at full value on export documents. • As a result, the data should be used to obtain insights into a rough approximation of the trade balance and major U.S. trading partners.
