  4. Red Scare part UnE • 1917-1920, during WWI • Wide spread fear of ANARCISM! • Reasons: real and imagined • Illegal searches and seizures • Unwarranted arrests/ deportations • Anti-German/ pro-ally propaganda

  5. Return of the Red Scare: “It’s ba’ack” • 1947-1957, during WWII • Increased fear of communist espionage • “Red Baiting” /“Black Listing” • Feared Soviet construction of atomic bomb • Communist party of the USA • NKVD atomic bomb spy-ring

  6. The NKVD • AKA People’s Commissariat for International Affair • Handled Soviet Union’s affairs of state • The US had them spied on • Stalin’s • Gathered: political, military and economic info from other countries • Enforced communism in other countries
