  10. Characters… • George • Protagonist • Small, wiry, quick-witted man • Protector of Lennie • Needs companionship • Dreams of owning his own land • Distrusting of others • Must make a difficult decision

Characters… • Lennie • Large, lumbering, childlike • Mild mental disability • Depends upon George, his friend and traveling companion, for guidance and protection. • Gentle and kind • Does not understand his own strength. • Love of petting soft things, such as small animals, dresses, and people’s hair • Gets in a lot of trouble

  12. Characters… • Curley’s Wife • Only female character in the story • “Tramp,” “Tart,” “Looloo.” • Dresses in fancy, feathered red shoes • Desperately lonely and has broken dreams of a better life

  13. Characters… • Candy • Aging ranch handyman • Lost his hand in an accident and worries about his future on the ranch • Offers his life’s savings to join George and Lennie in owning the land. • Best friend = his dog

Characters… • Crooks • The only black character in the novel • Gets his name from his crooked back • Proud, bitter, and caustically funny • Isolated from the other men because of the color of his skin • Becomes fond of Lennie • Asks Lennie if he can go with them and hoe in the garden of their land

  15. Characters… • Curley • The boss’s son • Wears high-heeled boots to distinguish himself from the field hands. • Rumored to be a champion prizefighter, • Confrontational, mean-spirited, and aggressive • Jealous and possessive of his flirtatious young wife

  16. Characters… • Slim • “Prince” of the ranch • Only character who seems to be at peace with himself • Other characters often look to Slim for advice. • Quiet, insightful man • Understands the nature of the bond between George and Lennie
