  2. I ran in panic up the steep lane. Someone, or something, was chasing me, I was sure. Had the Master already sent one of his creatures after me? I dared not turn around. I had to escape. I reached a white cottage and saw that the path divided. I needed to get to the wood. I would be safe there. But I had no idea which way to go?

  4. Keep going

  5. Keep going

  6. Keep going

  7. In the end I just chose any path and followed it. The straight track seemed to go on for ever. I could still feel the shadowy thing behind me getting closer and closer. Then, at least, I saw the wood ahead.

  8. As soon as I reached the wood I felt safer. The leafy shadows cooled and calmed me. I tried to catch my breath. Surely here would be a safe place to hide – to hide from him! I searched around.

  9. Long ago, my grandfather had told me that there were good spirits in the wood. Now I hoped they would help me and hide me. They would keep me safe from the Master. I looked deep into the wood. Where were the spirits when I needed them?

  10. I looked more and more closely, but as I did so I began to feel colder.

  11. My feeling of safety left me. There were no good spirits in this wood after all. Fear crept back into my bones and my heart began to pound again.

  12. Suddenly the light changed and became hard and cold. Once again I sensed something behind me. I felt an icy breath on the back of my neck and I knew it was the Master himself. Without turning I stiffened, knowing what would happen next.

  13. I felt the magician lift his wand and point it at my back. Then he cast a spell that filled the wood. The power of his magic poured into me.

  14. I was in his power again.
