  1. Finding Books Fleet Library @ RISD

  2. Search the RISD/Athenaeum catalog • begin at the RISD Library website: library.risd.edu • use the catalog search box at the top of the screen • select a search type: keyword, title, author, subject, call number • select the collection you want to search

  3. Search the RISD/Athenaeum catalog • search results appear in list form • sort by relevance, date, or title • limit search to available items (items not checked out)

  4. Search BROWN from the RISD/Athenaeum catalog Once an initial search in the RISD/ATH catalog is done… • the Search BROWN button appears • select it to REPEAT your search in Brown Libraries’ catalog • Search BROWN for additional titles not owned by RISD/ATH • Search BROWN when RISD’s copy is checked out • RISD students may have 5 Brown books checked out at a time

  5. Search BROWN from the RISD/Athenaeum catalog Once the Search BROWN button is selected… • Brown’s search results list appears • sort by relevance, date, title • return to the RISD/ATH catalog by selecting Return to Catalog

  6. More Search options in the RISD/Athenaeum catalog • search by advanced keyword, subject, author or title • search by call numbers or ISBN/ISSN • search Course Reserves…by Instructor or Course name

  7. More Search options in the RISD/Athenaeum catalog • notice the links to My Library (login to your library account) • links to RISD/ATH library websites, and RISD Databases • links to Fleet SEARCH, Lists, Interlibrary Loan, Reserves& Help

  9. More Search options in the RISD/Athenaeum catalog • notice the author, publisher, publication date, and subject links • select subject links to discover additional books with the same subject

  12. More Search options in the RISD/Athenaeum catalog • if the title you want is checked out, it’s easy to place a hold on it • place a hold by selecting REQUEST

Requesting Items in the RISD/Athenaeum catalog • the login window will open • type in your first or last name • type in the 14-digit Barcode number on the BACK of your RISD ID • it starts with 3444400… • if your login doesn’t work, contact the Library for help, 709-5901 • fill out the form and click SUBMIT • you will receive an email when the item is ready for pickup

  14. Search Academic eBooks from the RISD Library website • select to learn more about the eBooks collection • select eBooks to begin searching • select How to Search or How to Download for eBook tutorials

  15. What if RISD/ATH and BROWN don’t have a specific book or any books on my topic? • contact a librarian for suggestions on keywords, subjects, & sources to use • search worldcat.org - an online catalog of 10,000+ catalogs • use the RISD library’s Interlibrary Loan service

Search worldcat.org • worldcat is the world's largest network of library online catalogs • search many libraries at once for an item and then locate it in a library nearby • find research articles and digital items that can be directly viewed or downloaded • searching worldcat is a good way to determine what has been published on a topic • use RISD Library’s Interlibrary Loan Service to request items not available locally

  17. Refine your worldcat results • use the sidebar to refine your search by author, format, publication year, or subject • Next, select an individual title to see where it’s located

  18. Locate local worldcat items • scroll down the page and type in your zip code • this generates a geographic list of the closest libraries that own the item • ask an librarian if you need help interpreting worldcat holdings - we will be happy to help you-

Request items through Interlibrary Loan (ILL) • make use of RISD library’s Interlibrary Loan Service • find Interlibrary Loan under Services on the library website • or find the Interlibrary Loan link in the RISD/ATH catalog • select Book or Article / Media request • fill out and submit the online form • requests take 1-2 weeks to arrive - please plan accordingly • you’ll be notified by email when your request arrives
